Higher Level Classes?

Hello guys, recently I’ve been checking medical schools and their requirements, and I’ve been through some that say AP Credits cannot be used to fulfill reqs BUT they CAN be used to fulfill reqs if used to skip to a higher level class. I was just wondering, how do you determine what level is higher in the course catalogue?

For example, most SEAS students take Intro chem for engineers first semester, which AP Chem gives credit for. If you decide to skip that course and take a higher level chem courses, how do you determine if the level is higher? By the number? Sorry if this is kind of a dumb question… but I’m really stuck.

Look for a class that requires the class you want to skip as a prerequisite.

Just a note with the sciences (esp Chem):

Yes, AP gives you credit for Intro Chem for Eng, but NOT for the labs. You have to have your AP lab notebook approved by faculty in order to fulfill the lab requirement, and even if it is approved, you still don’t get the lab credit (just allows you to take the lab for Chem 2 with its lecture).

just fyi.

Thanks guys, your help if very much appreciated. So Kabobi, what do you mean by chem 2? If I’m gonna skip I might do organic chem (140 240 sequence) And btw I just checked the UVa website and they say AP Chem gives credit for 1410 and 1420, however intro chem for engineers is 1610 and 1620… So does AP Chem still give credit for 1610 and 1620?

according to this http://www.seas.virginia.edu/advising/pdfs/first_semester_fall_2008.pdf</a> you will still get credit (151 = 1610 etc) but need to take the labs or place out as previously said. you might also find this interesting [Department of Chemistry | First- and Second-Years](http://chem.virginia.edu/undergraduate-studies/undergraduate-faqs/first-and-second-years/) it strongly discourages organic your first year and gives you an alternative… and so does the pdf from seas i linked as well.

When I said Chem 2 I was referring to Intro to Chem for Eng 2. I think it’s offered in the spring semester…

I have to look at my class schedule later, but pretty much since I’m doing a pre-med track of engineering I need to take a lot of chem and bio. So far, I plan to take organic in 3rd/4th semester.

Interesting… Seems like organic chem is harder than I thought it would be. Btw some of those course number conversions are giving me migraines, the SEAS website should seriously be updated somehow.

Kabobi I’m also doing pre-med track of engineering, most likely biomedical but not yet decided. I think I’m gonna waive my AP credits and retake the intro courses then… just to get a stronger foundation?

you can always look up conversions at [Search New Codes: University Registrar at the University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/registrar/search.php)

i’m always against waiving credit, the intro courses at uva are weed out classes and very hard. but orgo is extremely hard here as well since it is a premed weed out class as well. so im not sure what would be better… maybe someone else has an opinion on that?

I’m actually planning on going med through biomed engr.
In case you haven’t seen this before, check out this link:

Look specifically at page 4.

that is the scariest thing i have ever seen, i don’t understand how you engineers do those kinds of schedules.

Yah I was really close to picking neuroscience first…or even an English major but meh :P

LOL a CLAS schedule would make my D hyperventilate! The SEAS schedule makes her happy :)

Thanks Guys, think I’ve got it figured out. I’ll be skipping CHEM 1610 and 1620 (chem 1 and 2) using AP credit to take some other course like Comp Sci or Econ. (I’ll still be taking the lab courses 1611 and 1621 if my lab notebook doesn’t get approved)

One question tho, does the 1800 honors series replace the 1600 series too? (I know it replaces 1400 series)
