Slightly OT, but not really since many of us think of texts as actual phone calls: Check out the website whenparentstext dot com. Hilarious.

ETA – OMG, they’re putting out a book. D’s birthday present!

yes, It will send you back the address and the phone number. you just have to make sure it’s for the location that you want. I sent a google text asking for the Barnes and Noble in my town and it sent me back a listing of about 5 different ones!! ;)

You can actually text google for a bunch of different things. if you want to impress them even further check out this link.

[Google Text Message Search - Use Your Cell Phone to Search Google](http://www.searchengineknowledge.com/searchtools/textmessagegoogle.php)

i’ve used it for addresses, directions, phone numbers, sports scores, weather, movie listings (just text the word movies and the zip code), etc.

When I was little everything around here was full serve. Then one day my mom apparently pulled over to get gas and it was a self serve station. She had no clue how to pump her own gas and back then didn’t have a cell phone to call and ask my dad… so she got back in her car and drove home. Ran out of gas on the way there. Had to walk to the nearest place with a phone, call my dad, and ask him to come help her. He was like why didn’t you just ask somebody at the gas station how to pump gas??? or call me from there??? My dad tells me this story every time he gets in my moms car and her tank is next to E. (he then gets out of her car and refuses to drive in it till she fills up her gas tank.) She has obviously since learned to pump gas but she has no perception when it comes to just how close to EMPTY she is. She ran out of gas about a year ago trying to get to a gas station where it was 2 cents cheaper then the one she had just passed. That time she called my dad on his cell phone and he brought her some gas for the car. She’s done this more then once, lol.

I’ve had to give my parents instructions on how to do various computer things over the phone… also they call me from best buy and ask me which cords and cables they need for their electronics… but then again I call them asking them what kind of wood i need to purchase for certain projects, how to tear carpet up out of my house, etc.
we’re probably about even.

Oh and to those of you with remote issues, this is the remote I was referring to…

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Logitech+-+Harmony+700+-+6+Device+Universal+Remote/9365402.p?id=1218092151754&skuId=9365402

It doesn’t have to be that one, there are a few other models. Usually they are on sale around black friday. Expensive but totally worth the money, trust me.

We text google during college football season to get scores! It’s so much easier than navigating with my phone’s browser. Just google “schoolname football” and if they are playing you get the current score and time remaining back!

fascinating, thanks, fendergirl! this may save us have to dig thru the phone book to find out this info.

Much younger brother called me one Thanksgiving about, oh, 2pm wanting to know how log to roast the 26 pound turkey they’d just put in the oven. I told him that I hoped his guests brought LOTS of appetizers. Lots.

One caveat about the google texting–for movies, it seems to use up quite a few messages–one for you to send, one getting back a reply asking you if you want the regular or 3D version & 3 texts of replies, including 2 texts of ads.

Can be useful for locating stores & restaurants for your GPS (for those of us who don’t enable our phones to do it).

Have had a phone call from younger relative asking what to do with a rock hard frozen turkey they wanted to cook that day.
Maybe related to your younger brother?

After trying to give my Father in Law help with his computer issues by phone, I resorted to the best and easiest advice - “Dad, unplug it. Plug it back in. Call me when you’re done.”
Five minutes later “Hey, it works!”. Problem solved. Free dinner.

I should preface this by saying my S (hs student) got this call, not me.

For a special thespian evening event, we had dyed his hair the day before so he could portray a certain character. He’s dyed his hair before for dramatic parts. We did it the day before because he had a tennis match in the afternoon before the event and knew we wouldn’t have time otherwise.

So, about 30 minutes before the event, his friend calls him and asks for instructions for coloring his hair.

Unfortunately S had to explain to his friend that 30 minutes wasn’t going to be enough time to go to the store, purchase hair dye, apply hair dye, and get to the event.

Hope the event went fine anyway, CQ!
Inglesfan, we have also done the unplug, wait & replug sometimes. It DOES sometimes work, but H doesn’t like to do it except as a last resort because it messes things up & he has to re-do them. Don’t understand exactly, but he & S do. ;)

Glad you changed your post.

My 92 year old father with great difficulty learned how to use the computer. My mother who is 85 has no interest but when he gets a fun email for her he prints it for her to read. My mother who wants to share this with me then faxes the email to me on my fax machine, which sometimes takes several pages.

No matter how many times i tell her, just forward the original email, she is a fax person and doesn’t remember or think about the fact that what she is sending me came from the computer originally.

Slightly off topic but to follow through: I thought the Google text for directions was the coolest thing! My 17YO thought so too. After some searching, GOOGLE (number equivalent) will get the directions, but the GOOGL (the number equivalent) will get you sports scores, weather, phone numbers, and other things. Try it out! Very cool! Type “from” and address, then “to” and address for 466453. For 46645, typer “weather” then zip code, or “Blockbusters” then the zip code. I just tried “McDOnalds” and zip code and it came right up.

Honestly a lot of things I’ve heard people call their parents about are things parents should have taught them at home. No one should go off to college not knowing how to do laundry!

I did the google thing. Cool, but mine wasn’t accurate. Also, it said, “data charges may apply”. Ummm, I do have T- Mobile, unlimited texting, but do not have a data plan otherwise. Does this mean it charges if I do this? Don’t like mysterious messages!!

Oct47, true, kids should know how to do laundry prior to college, but with our D, the terminology and multiple options on the fancy, brand new machines were foreign, compared with our old ancient, few option machines. Frugal D didn’t want to waste (or ruin) a load of clothes…
I learned with S…took picture of machines and left instructions on which buttons to push. (Visual kid) He can handle that, but also guessing my instructions on sorting clothes into colors has gone by the wayside…

My daughter spent her junior year abroad in London. She called on Skype to ask how to make chicken matzoh ball soup. I coached her through every step of the process from 6,000 miles away, “visually” checking her progess every step of the way. Good thing Skype is free, we were online for about 1 1/5 hours!

My recent HS graduate D called from a friend’s house to ask how to clean the oven. The friend’s parents were out of town until the next day. Turns out she had put a frozen pizza in upside down and 15 minutes later the cheese was all over the bottom of the oven. She didn’t like the part where I told her you try to wipe out any loose burnt stuff to keep it from smoking out the house. The house was already full of burnt cheese smoke so they slept at our house.
