Hip parents, goth or emo or are they the same?

All of this makes me glad I was a beer-drinking jock.

You’re all wrong. Emo, in its original context, was merely a branch of hardcore music which spawned during the 80s and 90s. The media has merely adapted it to imply a person who dresses in black, is generally sad/depressed and contemplates self-harm. Goth, on the other hand, has remained true to its literary origin, but it essentially means someone who dresses in dark clothing.

Eriatarka, technically you’re correct about the music thing. But this about a teen slang thing. Ask most teens today, and they won’t remember emo punk. By and large, they’ve accepted the media redefinition. Sorry, teens do that a lot. :(

This one has the most accurate definition of goth. Im not emo, so I cant confirm that definition. Also, real goth was bigger in the 80s. The hot topic offshoot is laughable.

I’ve never met a goth. I think it’s been relegated to halloween costume for the most part.

Emo is less clearly defined. Obviously [url=http://mindyourowngoddamnbusiness.com/images/emo.jpg]this[/url] is a good example of what an emo person may look like, but it’s more than that. Emo is basically just sad, depressed, maybe suicidal. Something could be described as emo if it seems dark or melancholy.

IMO Goths have a much better sense of style then Emo kids.

This bit of pejorative is courtesy of my teenage D:

“Question: How many Emos does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: None. They’re all huddled in a dark room, crying.”

I suppose this is one of those (either you get it or you don’t) things.

You clearly are not in the same communities I’m in. :p

Wikipedia’s goth article is actually pretty good. Among other things, it

[Goth subculture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Goth subculture - Wikipedia)

The emo article is mostly about the style of music, but it does have a bit on the subculture.

[Emo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“Emo - Wikipedia”>Emo - Wikipedia)

Both of my d’s went to a large public high school.

The groups come in and out.

Goth kid, emo kids and then scene kids

Right, what we’re hearing about now is “scene,” which seems pretty close to emo, but somehow crucially different.

I’ve never heard of scene. I guess I’m square.

I was just going to mention “scene.”
We were at our son’s college and were going to go to what looked like a pub with him, and he said it was all scene kids.

Kind of like emo without the emo. I think. Brighter colors, same styles. Google scene kids and you get a bunch of pictures.

My guys still wear baggy cargo shorts. Style schmyle.

It’s hard enough to find normal clothes for my 6’8" son. If he wanted to be super trendoid it would be impossible.

mom2three, I’m with ya…all three of my boys are well over 6 ft. tall and over 200 lbs…can’t imagine them in “skinny black jeans and size 12 Vans”, come to think of it they probably couldn’t get their thighs in skinny black jeans LOL.

They look like Paris Hilton with a better attitude and smaller clothing budget.

All of this subgroup confusion reminds me of one of my favorite anecdotes. An Italian-American friend of mine lived in New Jersey when he was growing up. His sister went to “the shore” with a non-Italian friend of hers. The non-Italian friend looked around at the people on the beach and said “Oh, this is terrible…there are too many dagos here.”

My friend’s sister asked her what she meant by “dagos.” She said, "You know, lower-class people who don’t stay at a cottage or hotel, they just ‘go for the day.’ "

So my friend’s sister goes home and her [very Italian] mother asks her how things were at the shore, and she says “Not so good. Too many dagos.”

Here is a humor site that makes fun of various scenes and how they aren’t even remotely original:
