Hip parents, goth or emo or are they the same?

So I picked my 15 year old up at the beach today and he said there were too many “emos” at the beach. I asked him what an emo was and he shrugged and said “oh you know, black jeans at the beach.” I thought that was “goth”…what’s the difference between an emo and a goth or is “emo” a local term for the goth-y kids or is “goth” out and “emo” now the term? I don’t even know why I want to know but gosh darn it I feel older every year when I don’t even know the “lingo” anymore.

They are different groups. Goths seem to do more of the dark makeup thing and baggier clothes (at least here). I can’t really describe the difference, but my kids can so I’ve learned to recognize it when I see it.

I think they’re similar but not interchangeable. Goths are into the “dark” side. Emos just tend to be sad (the term Emo comes from the word “emotional”.) They both tend to dress in dark clothes.

I’m not a parent, but I’ll give my 2 cents on this:

Goth: a person who likes to dress and act differently to the other people in society, normally in black. They tend to be thinkers and more often than not quite creative. They have a satyrical sense of humour, and are able to laugh at both themselves and other people. They listen to and appreciate all sorts of good music, but usually metal.

Emo: Considers themselves to be much more in touch with their emotions than anyone else; whereas they really just feel sorry for themselves. Most emo’s will claim to be depressed, or simply misunderstood. They think they are unique, and fail to realise that they actually look like half the teenage population of south england. You can recognise an emo by looking for these general characteristics: skinny jeans, stripey jumpers, converse sneakers and black long hair covering part of the face [in boys].

I believe emos are the drama queens (that goes for both sexes). I think they cry a lot. The guys have big hair pulled over their faces so they can only see out of one eye and they wear tight black skinny jeans. The bigger the hair and the skinnier the pants, the better for the weird proportion I guess. I’ve also seen the species wear dangling suspenders and other dangly accessories. Girls have similar hairstyles but are usually multicoloured streaks of various shades ranging from shocking pink, purple to lime green, and wear similar wardrobes.

Goths are just into darkness and black. They are Gothic, as in they like grave sites, eerieness, black lace, leather, long black dresses, capes, studded and pierced stuff and the like. Unlike emos, I think they don’t cry.

That’s my observation anyway.

Okay, I never even heard the term “emo” until I read this thread, but I think I get it. Would it be correct to think that goths would have more piercings?

(crossposted with Sequoia)

Ah that all makes sense… thanks for the “kids” updates. Gotta keep up with “stuff” for a few more years.

The Goths ate babies. Emos are like Goths, only vegetarian? :D

Oooooh, you mean now. :o How about this:
Goths: Death is an adventure.
Emos: Life sucks.

Goths were an ancient Germanic tribe famous for having sacked Rome in the 5th century AD. Emus are large, flightless birds native to Australia. It’s easy to tell them apart.

(Sorry)

But can you tell a Visigoth from an Ostrogoth, or an emu from an ostrich?

Goths have a lot of piercings. Emos run your high school literary magazine. :)

LOL Geek_mom, I don’t know, but I’m going to look around and see if I have it figured out. My 17 year old just flew through and I asked him and he said Emos cry alot which is what Sequoia said so maybe you’ve got it in a nutshell. I do laugh because my brother has to live with an 80s senior portrait where he had permed his straight hair all curly…so the emos and the goths will have to live with their senior pictures and explain their hair culture to their children.

“Can you tell an emu from an ostrich?”

No, but here’s an Emo Emu:
http://images.wikia.com/nonciclopedia/images/2/2c/Emo_emu.jpg

Actually today’s emo seems to have evolved more from the ostrich than the emu. The “life sucks” philosophy comes from ostrich’s trait of burying its head in the sand. Emus are happy and like to race across the sands.

If there are lions and zebras in the background it’s an ostrich. If there are kangaroos it’s an emu.

Does anybody remember Molly Shannon and Chris Kattan’s “Goth Talk” on SNL?

^ No, but I remember Hope Is Emo on YouTube. Tragic. “The words are dying!”

I think of goth as a lifestyle – certain kinds of clothing, music, hair – and emo as just annoying.

I remember Goth Talk.

HUSH - can you hear the raven?
