Recent article said Hispanics are not receiving a benefit in college admissions anymore. There was speculation that too many non-Hispanics were claiming Latino ancestry for an advantage in admissions and now only those with truly compelling stories/backgrounds are taken seriously by adcoms and getting an admissions ‘bump’. Please respond if you are 1. Hispanic and applied to Ivy League + schools and 2. Received decisions from those schools. Also provide your stats. This informal survey would be a great help to us and to future applicants. Thanks guys!
I got rejected by the only Ivy I applied to which was Barnard. But I got into schools like Drexel and Loyola which were reaches for me. I would like to think being latina only helped a bit and they were more interested in my back story. I was diagnosed with a learning diability and for years took those “special classes”, when i scored a high enough to get out of them, I leaped at the chance to take APs. I was a mostly A student at the time (math is my weakest subject) but I wanted the challenge. I became a B/B+ student and in my essay I admitted to that fact, but said it was worth it because I feel like I’m getting what I’m supposed to getting from school: being challenged and learning. Also no one on my mom’s side has gone to college yet, so I wasn’t allowed so much as an inch of wiggle room to go mess around, I had to get to college and go to med school, no ifs or buts about it.

@Elly710 Thanks for that!
@CCaffine Congrats on your acceptances. Those schools definitely have a good mix of people. I would only think Barnard wants a higher gpa and act but otherwise you have a great bio! Drexel and Loyola are probably more fun but, let me say this, if you get all As at either school you may have a great shot at transferring to Barnard if that’s your hearts desire! Good luck!
Just curious on how this survey will help you. You are either Hispanic or you’re not. It will help in admissions or it won’t. There is nothing you can do to change ether of these items. So what is the purpose of this survey? So you can better chance yourself?
There is a sub forum dedicated to Hispanic students and you’ll find more info there:

Different schools admissions may have different policies but I think it’s safe to say that most of the elite schools are looking for more than checking a box. They are looking for a diverse student body and all the characteristics they should bring to the table. So if you check the Hispanic box and don’t have Spanish as a 2nd language in the household or other characteristics of most Hispanics then you probably will not get the boost.
Also there are plenty of high stats Latinos especially Latinas so any competition between them is high.
@me29034 There is a reported case concerning Princeton Admissions in which an AO remarked on an applicants record that they liked the ‘Hispanic’ applicant but wish s/he had more ‘flair’ which I assume is code for they didn’t really consider the applicant a Hispanic.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Race in admissions is allowed to be discussed in one thread only, in the Admissions forum.
