in haha congrads…itd be stupid if you didnt get in

Generally, I hate these chances threads because so many things have gotten so unpredictable. You have one major issue on your hands. You’re not in the top 10% of your class (assuming your school reports that). 88% of the 2006 entering class was in the top 10%, and if you consider the recruited athletes and those kids from truly stunning schools (like TJ) who get in if they’re not in the top 10%, this doesn’t leave many slots. Your SAT scores get you close to the 75th percentile, which is very good. It may be enough to beat out the 10% issue.

But there’s a lot that’s unknown about the way UVA admissions looks at your high school, your strength of schedule, and how you stack up to others applying there from your high school.

So, I’m not sure shoebox is right, though for your sake, I hope he is. It’s just going to depend on how admissions looks at it.

Darnit, I’m a girl!! My last name has “shoe” in it, so shoebox is a nickname that I got when I volunteered for a camp in 7th grade. Sheesh… =P
Anyways, I think it matter far less for rank for IS than OOS. I know plenty of people between 15-20% who got in (all from NoVa though). Not saying you’re wrong Tarhunt, but given everything else, I think he has an awesome shot. But yes, rank is quite important, agreed.

shoebox:

Sorry about the girl thing. How was I to know?

I’m not saying I’m right, but I do think it puts scads on the bubble. Remember that, if you’re currently at UVA, you couldn’t know more than about 1 in 10 who weren’t in the top 10% EXCEPT for those who go to high schools that don’t rank. Remember that those are left out of the reporting.

There are a whole lot of things unknown in this. For instance, if there’s a strong upward grade trend, that might negate the 10% issue because UVA may look at it as the student they’re geting now; not the one in the 9th grade. A downward grade trend might have the opposite effect. Strength of schedule will have an effect. The number of kids applying from scads’ school might have an effect.

It’s really hard to tell.

Tarhunt - Agreed. My school only reported deciles, but even those were sometimes skewed. Im not sure if UVa saw this as legitimate “ranking” (Im from Fairfax County, VA).
Also, sorry for the outburst about being a girl. Someone in another post just called me a dude too =P i guess because my name doesn’t include “girl” or “chick” or “pink”, then its a safe guess

hey thanks a bunch for the insight so far. tarhunt, like u said, i not really sure if itll make up for the 10% deal, but i have had a strong upswing since i was a frosh, and am takin all ap classes now, and will have 10 under my belt by the time im done. any more thoughts from u all would b awesome.

anymore thoughts?

Go for it, scads. I enjoyed Virginia quite a bit. I hope you get in. I think you have a good chance. I think that if you were in the top 10%, it would be pretty close to a slam dunk.

Good luck to you!

thanks for the input g
