HKU or HKUST

Hey guys,
I just got an interview invitation from University of Hong Kong for dentistry. Interview on 20th april. Just wondering if anyone got the invitation too?

Regarding such interviews, do you guys think they’ll make life hard for us or its just a brief one ? The selection is usually done already right? How will the admission ratio go usually after interview?

Hi everyone , I am very new here (actually just registered ) , and I have just applied for HKUST on 30 March. Is it late ? I’m wondering…
Anyways, I am an international student from Indonesia and I am a Chinese. I am just wondering how long does it take to get an offer from HKUST ?
Any answers will be highly appreciated :)

hey, guyz. Back in few days, I posted my result regarding HKU IBGM. (REJECT!!)

and today, I am here to tell you that I have been rejected from HKUST GLobal bizness as well…

Many people couldnt believe such result, and to be honest, I dont understand it as well.

I hold an IB prediction of 40/42 (without 3 bonus points - PENDING) and TOEFL score of 114.

But I was admitted to HKUST BBA program, with some appealing scholarship conditions as well.

I am still waiting for HKU for BBA/BBA(ACC&FIN) and ECON&FINANCE, and I think I will be going to HKU if I am admitted to one of those programs in HKU (HOPEFULLY!!)

PS. MangoAddict - Cheer up ㅠ I cant understand why SAT score of 2340 could possibly fail HKUST business… you are korean, right? I heard GB has like a quota on the number of Koreans because our ratio is too high there… =/

btw, My japanese friend with IB36/42 got into GB… whilst my korean friend with SAT2200 was waitlisted for all programs.

sucks to be korean lol =]

@dohyun- then none of my Korean classmates will be getting into either then. 0.0 And I don’t think their grades are even as good as yours.

im just praying i can get into any program right now with my 38… hopefully it’s bba or econ and finance

It seriously sucks to be korean. Even the mediocre schools in the states expect any korean kid to get at least 2100. Ughhhhhhh

@dohyun: so u got into ur second choice and u were given an offer and rejected at the same time? ok… since it seems that i am “waitlisted” for all choices, i might as well assume that i am actually rejected by global business department but waitliated for the other two choices… ahhh that doesnt make me feel any better :(

Hi guys, I have made a Facebook group called “HKUST International Waitlist Applicants 2011” for all waitlisted applicants to keep each other updated. Search up the group or ask me for an invite. My name is Justin Yu. Good luck to you all!

Hi everyone, I am currently a junior in the US school system and was born in Hong Kong. I possess a Hong Kong Permanent Resident card and have wanted to go back to Hong Kong ever since I was little. I have heard that it is easier to get in because I am a resident of Hong Kong studying in the US. Is there any truth to this? I dont know what I would major in either. Thanks in advance

Hey I’m an international student from Jamaica,im half chinese half afro-jamaican and was wondering if anyone else applied to HKU and has not received any admissions notice yet? I applied in October 2010 last year and when i login online it still says under consideration? Kinda worried now since i have gotten replies from a US uni and have up to May1 to tell them whether im going or not. Is this normal, does this mean im on the waiting list automatically since i was not sent a reply in february. Also I applied to HKUST March 3 and was wandering if anyone has any idea of when they reply if u apply so late.

Apparently interview scores matter a lot too, so it’s not just about IB grades :)

@ To everyone lol
I applied to HKU and HKUST on about 20th Dec 2010. I got my HKUST offer on 27th of Feb and on the next day HKU sent me an email for my interview which was held on March 4th. I got my final offer from HKU on the last week Monday of March.
I decided to go to HKU coz its more prestigious and I get to choose the specific course after I study there for 6 months. Anyone going to HKU???

I’m still deciding but I think I’m going to HKU! I was accepted into the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance programme on 3/28. I’m an international student from Taiwan. Does anybody know how hard it is to change majors at HKU? Because on my application I put down Bachelor of Business Administration/Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance as my first choice, since I wanted the general BBA the most. I don’t think I will do very well in accounting. XD

Hey guys!

I’m an international applicant accepted to the Tech. & Management dual degree program in HKUST this March and I was wondering how rigorous the school curriculum is and how much time students have for club activities like sports and drama. Does anyone know?

And what’s the social life there? Do intl students integrate with the locals well??

@kevobest- I’m actually in HK now and going to HKU tomorrow so there’s a 60%-70% chance I’ll be going. Hope to see you there next year.

Hi guys, I was just notified by an admission officer who is a close friend of mine, that there was a forum going on Collegeconfidential about HKUST and I think I have found the right one.
I am a current Global Business student. I was given IB conditional offers for both Global Business and Dual Degree in Tech Mgmt a few years ago.
I did the IB Diploma program and was predicted a 43/45 at the time of the application. I took HL Math, HL Physics, HL History, HL Business, SL English A1 and SL Mandarin B and I got 41/45 for my actual exam.
My SAT I was 2340 and three of my SAT IIs were all over 750. I also self-studied three AP exams (AP Calc AB, BC and Physics B) and managed to get all 5’s. Furthermore, I was already a year into my business since its startup.
I know a bunch of friends who had similar stats but got rejected from GBUS, and also those who got into GBUS with relatively low scores. HKUST does not seem to be looking for students who are academically smart. HKUST is in fact proud that their undergraduate students are more diverse, wacky, creative and active compared to other schools in Hong Kong.
There’s only a few difference between GBUS and other BBA programs. First year students take exactly the same courses whether they are in GBUS or general BBA. GBUS is just a degree. It will give you a slight advantage in getting SOME summer internships or full time jobs in Hong Kong, but nothing more. You will also discover that GBUS students are not the ones who get all the As out there. You’ll even see some GBUS students failing a course.
However, one thing that makes GBUS special is the case competitions and those ‘networking’ moments. I mean if you are not interested in such things, there is no point of being in GBUS. DO not worry too much about not being admitted into Global Business because getting a job or even succeeding in life :stuck_out_tongue: is not about grades and majors. All degrees are considered equal in the eyes of employers. I know some friends in School of Engineering who managed to get summer internship offers from top banks.

However, if you still want to get into GBUS, you can apply to transfer after first semester. Minimum grade requirement is B+ but of course the cutoff is much higher.

Guys, HKUST is a great school. I got accepted to HKU IBGM but came to UST GBUS instead. What’s more surprising is that I also got accepted to UChicago, Cornell, LSE and UPenn but ended up in HKUST. Well, the US Schools were due to financial problems.

Changbai,
One thing about UST is that it is still quite local. I can see that more and more international students are being admitted every year, but it doesn’t really do any good in integrating the student body. Most societies are still carried out in Cantonese or Mandarin. But you can always join and ask your Cantonese friends to translate for you.
But I have seen many internationals getting along with locals very well especially through sports teams.
I do know that workload for any courses in UST is heavy. It will be extra heavy for Dual Degree students.
Here, if you don’t study and maybe study a day before an exam, you will get around C. So it all depends on what kind of grades you want. If you want an A, you better study almost everyday because Mainland Chinese students are extremely hardworking. They are the ones who usually get the high range of As in courses.

hkusthkust
can we transfer to hkust/cuhk/hku after the first semester in college if we are studying in an american university? what are the requirements?

Actually, I don’t know anyone who transferred from US Unis to HKUST. I know some people who used to attend UIUC and Pepperdine for a year and dropped out and then applied to UST and started off as a year 1.

@verystressed
hope to see you in HKU in sep. I need to focus for my A-level exam which is held in May, but I just cant right now… I better study to meet the conditions… If I don, I’m so dead… lol
:((
