HKU or HKUST

@ jgeelong

You took your IB exams already and the results are out? How is that possible? But anyhow, yeah :slight_smile: It was a main round offer, and I applied like in late December of 2011. It seems like the conditions are higher in this field than other fields like science/econ. (The norm seems to be 34-36 including bonus points)

@ qorlfla

I live in Australia so I took my IB exams in November 2011 and had my results in early January 2012.

I am seriously dying waiting to hear from them, however, I am worried that my transcript will let me down.

does the school of science in hkust take so much time in deciding the applicants?? anyone registered for science and already have the decision?

^I completed my application a week ago and got an interview request yesterday. My interview for school of science program is on the 28th of Feb. candle89@ which program are you interested in ? I will be taking Physics.

wow, it’s very superb, i alrdy applied in December and i still have ā€˜under consideration’ this is very frustrating. i am interested in chemistry

@Iamtitanium@ i hadn’t any interview.
But some question they might ask…

  1. Why do you want to study at hkust.
  2. How you can contribute to hkust.
  3. Why you want to study abroad.
    4 why you want to study physics.
  4. What are your future plams.
  5. How many colleges you have applird for thr same course.

That is all… .

I have my Engineering interview tomorrow…
Anyone had theirs yet? Can you share your experience and stuff?

Are you sure hkust’s lastest date is 31st march? their deadline is 29 Feb, so early?

@candle89 i’m also chem and i havent heard anything yet

Thanks for the advice…just got to wait it out

Hi guys,
I’m a new user here and I just stumbled upon this website whilst looking for some information on HKU. I’m a student in Australia that’s about to start uni and I’ve gotten a conditional offer from HKU for their LLB degree (I got this offer on the 1st of February). It was my first choice and I have MBBS (otherwise known as BBA (Law)) listed as my second (which is still under consideration). Anyway, I’ve paid my deposit but I was just wondering what the difference is between these two degrees? Is the BBA (Law) program kind of like a combined degree of Commerce and Law (here in Australia, we can study combined law with commerce)? My future goal is to become a barrister, so currently I’m not to sure as to whether i should do the LLB or the BBA (Law) degree in order to achieve this, so can anyone help me there? (However, I’ve also heard people saying that the LLB degree is better if you want to specialise in Law as the BBA (Law) degree will only allow me to touch upon the surface of Law)
Also, does anyone know when scholarship offers will be given out as my acceptance email also stated this: ā€œPlease kindly note that your Entrance Scholarship application is still under process, we will let you know once the result released. It is strongly advised to accept our offer first to avoid any delay.ā€ Actually, how likely are HKU to give out scholarships to non-JUPAS students studying Law?

Sorry guys, I meant BBA (Law) as 2nd choice and not MBBS since I found out that’s Medicine. So ignore the MBBS bit ^^"

Hey I’m really anxious now, UST just emailed me saying they have already reviewed my application!!! What does that mean!!!

@elaeye
Hey elaeye I am from Aus too. Where are you about to start? Did you apply through fast track? Also, can you give me a run down of what type of student you are so I can assess my chances.

@jgeelong
Hi! :slight_smile: I’m about to start at USyd for now, but I think I’ll be moving to HK around August for HKU! I didn’t apply through fast-track, so I’m in the main round batch. As to what type of student I am, well lol, I personally think I’m not all crazy on academics and I’m more of the social type rather than staying holed up (friends over grades). However, I’m also really hard-working and I still try to do my best in whatever I’ve signed up for :slight_smile: Instead of doing the IB I did the HSC and I mainly got all Band 6’s and E4’s for my subjects except for one where I got a Band 5 (but it was borderline Band 6 too). I hope that answers all of your questions and if you have anymore, feel free to ask! :slight_smile: Otherwise, best of luck with your application and I really hope you get in so at least I’ll know someone from Australia too who’s gonna be doing law in HKU! :D

@ elaeye
You’re soooo lucky you found out so quickly… I literally don’t think I will find out till August! Well I did IB and I got a 38/42…wouldn’t say I am overly academic though going to Monash for the moment and doing Law. My ATAR was 98.1 what was yours ( just to get an idea of what they are after) Any how, I am so excited for you!

@jgeelong
Aww, well don’t give up! My ATAR was 99.2, but I know for a fact they place REALLY heavy emphasis on english and I think it’s because I did all 4 units of english and got Band 6’s in all of them that they let me in lol ^^"

@ elaeye

WOW 99.2!!! That’s amazing, no wonder you got such an early offer! I did HL English for IB and got a 6 out of 7 so hopefully they might still consider me. Do you know any other info on when they give out offers etc.?

Hi everyone ! I am an international student from Indonesia.
Btw, I have been offered a place in HKUST(4year program).
And I want to know, do ppl in hong kong can speak english fluently?
Thanks! :)

@futureceng

Hi and congratulations!! From my experience in Hong Kong (was just there recently) people on HK Island speak English really really well. You can definitely survive there with no Cantonese. People in Kowloon do not speak English as well and it is a lot less common. People who go to English based Unis in HK are expected to speak English almost fluently but outside of class they tend to speak Cantonese. Hope this helps
