HKU or HKUST

^jlo. Why not do an MD in the US or Canada? if you join the program here you’ll be studying a bachelors degree. Other than grades aside, are you a Permanent resident of Hong Kong and can speak fluent cantonese? If not, then chances will be very slim. From what I know FacMed is reluctant to give offers to non-jupas students as the program itself is catered to locals who will practice in Hong Kong, and since there is a general deficit of physicians in Hong Kong with all the current mess with lack of space and patients from the mainland, they’re afraid that non-locals will not practice in Hong Kong. In fact the government is discouraging the FacMed into accepting non-locals as they want all their physicians to stay in Hong Kong.

Not saying that chances are impossible, but there really are no non-locals in medicine…
(This phenomenon generally applies to all FacMed programs like BPharm, BChinMed, and BNurs)

Hey Jilo! I’m a non Jupas candidate and I was pretty much groomed in a British Curriculum, i.e Cambridge IGCSEs and GCE A Levels. I’m fretting alot because of this Cantonese issue. Do you speak Cantonese? Did they ask you questions in Cantonese during the interview? If the answer to both the questions is yes, it will definitely boost my chances and make me feel a whole lot better, since I’m pretty much down and out, at the moment. I’ve worked so hard for my grades. I really don’t want them to go to waste :(

@zhuangzi
from your posts it seems you are discouraging others from applying MBBS in HKU. Are you afraid of others competing with you?? (HAHA, just kidding)

I’m not a permanent resident but I do have a HK identity card (honestly the whole system is pretty confusing to me).
Getting into an MD program in Canada is extremely competitive and it is in fact my first choice. I don’t want to go to the US because of the cost and trouble of returning to Canada. Whereas if I got into HKU, I would in fact stay in HK since I have family there and it is somewhere I actually want to practice medicine.

@shak I do speak fluent cantonese and they asked 1 question in the 15minute interview in cantonese. Do you not speak any at all?

@Jlo

I’m actually Sri Lankan and don’t speak a word of Cantonese. That’s why I am fretting so much :confused: The website says they make exception, so I’m hoping I’m on of the few. The website says that during this 2012 intake, the chance of being picked for a course at HKU is higher than it was in 2011 and higher than it will be in 2013. So I think, if we have a good chance of getting in, it’ll be during this year’s intake. I hope we get a place!

@annababy. not at all. its reality right here come here and find at yourself.

Did anyone here get an offer from HKUST yet??

No one at my school got an offer yet either…

@Sawhyd- U applied for the early decision and yet u still didnt get ur answer?? Well at least u are bound to get ur result in the next week…Good Luck!!

Damn! I just got the offer letter from HKU. It gives me till 3rd April to accept/reject. I haven’t received a response from HKUST yet. What should I do?

@LanykLint
Hey congrats on the offer! I say you go for it! From what I hear, HKU is a great uni, and if you’re not happy with the place, after getting in, you can always transfer to HKUST. Don’t let go of such an incredible opportunity. A definite yes!

Email HKUST your HKU acceptance and ask for an early decision?

@bluelovexD

Should I really do that? I read somewhere that HKUST doesn’t like such emails and just gives you a rejection letter.

I was just smitten by HKUST. I know that HKU is a great university but, I had my mind set on HKUST. If I don’t accept this offer and then HKUST rejects me, I’ll be in a fix.

I’ll wait till 2nd April and then pay the deposit I guess.

Hey everyone,
I am an international applicant from the US, and I just found out this morning that I was accepted into HKU’s IBGM program. I’m totally ecstatic about this acceptance, because the program offers such incredible opportunities to its students. Hopefully, all those of you who are still waiting decisions will get into HKU, HKUST or the university of your choice. Best of luck!
