HKU or HKUST

@Thunderboltsid Hey, I am from Pakistan so i guess we are neighbors. I had O Levels 10As 1B and A Level 2A* 3As and 1B. What are yours? I am very curious about my admission decision

@theasiansadness Your SATs look good, I can’t really say about the GPA as I’m unfamiliar with the GPA system. They are supposed to evaluate the application holistically so I thing you might get in. Why not contact the admissions office and ask them instead. You cal also ask the international student reps from the universities. All the best for your application.

@Ahtesham Glad to hear we’re neighbors :P. Your scores look pretty good. I am from the Indian style CBSE education system, and I’m yet to take my final exams in march 2013, My predicted score is in the range 90-95%. I’m quite uncertain about my admission decision as my grade X score was 88% and also because I have a low speaking score on iBT. I have 105 in iBT(R-29,W-28,L-28,S-20). I am yet to receive my SAT reasoning scores and my SAT subject tests in ML2,Phy & chem are due on november 3rd.

Correction : *Think

@Ahtesham Why aren’t you applying to HKUST, I thought they were better in eng. than others. Aren’t they?

@thunderboltsid good luck man. I hope you got accepted.frankly i want to apply to hkust but they dont give out scholarships. well lets see what happens next.

Well, I guess I can give some opinions on the location since I live in HK :slight_smile:
HKUST is quite far from the city center, and HKU isn’t really that convenient as well since there isn’t a MTR station(underground railway system in HK). The only way to get to HKU is by bus. But if you’re planning to live on campus, the location of HKU is definitely better :)

A question regarding to interviews…does anyone know at what time of the day do the admission officers call in to interview? Cuz I live in the U.S., are they going to call me at 3 a.m. lol?

@Ahtesham Judging by the previous comments, I’ve read people stating that they’ve received upto 100% scholarship from HKUST. Does CUHK give out scholarships?

@Whostolemycookie I thought living at UST would be more scenic. How do HKU, UST & CUHK compare to each other when it comes to international (non-local, non-mainland) student diversity and populace.

@theasiansadness Haha…Quite possible :P

@Ahtesham @theasiansadness If you don’t mind me asking, I’d like to know what are your ECs?

what is that lol? extracurricular activities?

Hello. I am an ECE undergraduate in my final year at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and I would be graduating by September 2013. In spite of this, I still want to apply to HKUST (I have started filling the online application), so that I can resume for the 2013-2014 session, and I hope to transfer credits, in order that I may finish in two years. I really want to come to HKUST because of the nice research opportunities for undergrads which is not available in Nigeria(we hardly do any research here, and we basically cram our way through-no insults intended). Do you guys think that its worth it to apply since I would soon be done? What are my chances of entry as I am one of the top students in my class(though with a couple of bad grades), a great recommendation letter, and also with leadership experiences. lastly, would I get any form of scholarships as the tuition is high, compared to what we can afford in Nigeria. Thanks, and sorry for the length

@theasiansadness Yep, the extracurricular activities.
@Ababio You should probably email them regarding your concern. Regarding the scholarships, I’m pretty sure they give out scholarships but they tend to be competitive.

@thenderboltsid Thanks, I just mailed them and they asked me to carry on. I am just worried about d bad grades and the fact that I dont think I can go if I dont get a full scholarship coz its unaffordable. Any advise?

@thunderboltsid My ECs include table tennis (state champion for 4 years), serving at church for 3 years, key club (4 years and over 100 hours of service), business manager of school newspaper. What about you?

@Ababio I highly support you to study in HK. Ababio, to be honest with you, my knowledge of Nigeria as a whole is very insufficient. However, I truly believe by studying in HK, on of the biggest cities in the world, you can definitely widen your view. Especially if you study well and finds a job in HK, thats even better! I mean…not all African college students have that chance! I am sure the HK admission officers value variability…and I am guessing you don’t have too many friends applying for hk universities? Just give it a try and see how it goes. In terms of tuition, I am not sure how much you can afford, but most of them are at around 5500 US dollars a year, plus you can apply for scholarships. Good luck!

@theasiansadness. Thanks a bunch!!! I hope I get in, and I am so excited about my application dat I already feel as if I am in. Alrite

@the asiansadness, I beleive no one else is applying from my country. So does that mean I stand a better chance? Thanks

@Ababio Not exactly, But as the universities want diversity on campus, they may happen to take the only applicant from Nigeria regardless of “Not-So-Awesome” grades.

@theasiansadnes Whoa! that’s sounds awesome. I don’t have much in the extra curricular activities, I’ve won a couple of National IT quizzes and Science quizzes in India, placed second or third on others I’ve participated. First prize in a National level Website Designing competition, over 350 hours of social service(Educating the financially deprived with a couple of NGOs), First prize in a national science exhibit, There are a few others which are more of school/personal projects which can’t be mentioned as an achievement i.e Creating a couple of robots, Creating my own startup, etc… Not much on the sports end and that seriously bothers me. Do you think having only Academic ECs will impact my application negatively.
