@starrrr : u heard anyth frm hksar scholarship yet???

Hey guys, just some quick questions for both HKU and HKUST:
- Is the merit-based scholarship easy to earn for enrolled students? (like, is meeting the GPA requirement easy enough for smart kids?)
- How big is the non-Asian population? (doesn’t have to be statistics, just how you feel when you stroll around the campus is enough.)
- Is the campus culture unique? Dorm cultures? (Some examples are Harvard’s housing system, MIT’s East/West halls, etc.)
- Average courseload for Engineering school? (hours/week preferably)

Thanks in advance guys! :)

Hey guys!

So I’ve been reading this thread for a while now, first of all- congratulations to everyone starting their studies in Hong Kong right now!

I’m an 18 year old girl from Holland (the Netherlands), Europe and I’m going to apply to HKU, HKUST and CUHK’s BBA programmes as soon as the application period starts. Which means starting next week for HKU!

I graduated from a dutch pre-university high school this June. This high school diploma grants me access to any university in Holland, but I really want to go to Hong Kong. The only reallyyy scary thing is the competition, since my grades aren’t outstanding…

Does anyone know anything about the number of european students at HK universities? or dutch students in particular?

Looking forward to an active discussion about 2013’s student intake here :D

Question about HKUST. What programming language is computer science major taught using? How are the hands-on experiences and labs? What is the average GPA of CS students there?

^it may be easier to get the answer if you email professors/grad students in the comp sci department. you can often find their email addresses on the department web site.

Thanks. I’ll post back here once I find out.

Also, I’m from America and planning to apply to HKUST. After HKUST, if I go there, I intend to work for my masters at a top American university. What are the chances of doing so? Just how do American universities view HKUST and an American student who has gone to study there?

I just got a reply. The average GPA of a graduating computer science student at HKUST is 2.8/4.0

^ You might think that’s pretty low, but that is the norm in Asian universities. Be ready to get used to low grades (at least compared to America).

From a student blog of HKUST
US colleges and universities might not aware its grading system. If you attended HKUST and want to enroll US schools for graduate studies, your HKUST GPA could be a strike against you.

How many of you are planning to apply at HKU/UST/CUHK for fall 2013 admission ? If so which fields are you guys applying for?

Hi, i am too applying to HKU and CUHK for fall 2013 and considering engineering as my first choice

@Ahtesham - I’m applying to HKUST and HKU with engineering as a first preference. I am from India, Which country do you belong to? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, What are your qualifications(SAT, TOEFL, GPA?)

Hi guys, I am planning on applying for HKU Law this fall. I am really nervous right now because from what I heard this school is really competitive. What are the general requirements for GPA and SAT scores? I also took 6 APs, but they are all 3s and 4s…

Please give me some advices! thx a lot!

@theasiansadness General Requirements for HKU are a minimum of 80 on iBT, around 2000 on SAT reasoning with at least a 550 on CR. Since you’d be applying for Law school, they’ll look for your communication skills so you might need an over 100 iBT score and over 600 CR score on SAT reasoning. As far as GPA is concerned, if you’re in top 5% of your class, you need not worry.

thx thunderbolt…but what if I have an SAT around 2100 but slightly lower GPA (weighted 3.98, unweighted 3.3)?
