hey anyone here applying to the hkust with cie a-levels?
no one in my class had heard anything from them although majority of us are applying for the early application.
i am also wondering which one is better in business administration, hkust,hku,or cuhk

Hi I applied under the mainround application to hku for the bachelor of science… Right now I am confused, which uni is better for science, hkust or hku? If you guys have any idea about this, please reply me
thank you all :)and good luck ;)

@monica14 hkust Locally it’s considered pretty decent. hku is okay in general reputation but its strengths (purely based on my opinion and personal experience) lie mostly in law and medicine. hkust is on the rise!

Hey, thanks for replying Yes, I have heard from my friends as well that HKUST offers a better science program… then in that case, should I reject HKU? the thing is, I have to pay my deposit by 12th of March…
What should i do? should i secure my seat and pay HKD 10 000 , or just leave it?

@expertelder

I’m applying to HKU and UST with CIE A-lvl results(completed), yet to get their reply

@monica14
Perhaps you should inform UST of your HKU offer so that they can get back to you quickly.

@monica14 Congratulations on the HKU offer. I’d say, contact HKUST and tell them that HKU has given you an ultimatum until 12th march and your first preference is HKUST. Ask them to release your result as quickly as possible. Wait until 12th and if they don’t release the result secure your seat at HKU- Don’t let HKD 10,000 ruin your future lest any bad outcome comes from HKUST. All the best for HKUST :)

@lovekorea @thunderboltsid Thank you for the congratulation and for the suggestion Is it alright though that I tell UST regarding HKU’s admission offer? Will it in a way give a negative message about me? I have another question, if you guys I have any opinion. I applied to University of British Columbia as well (Vancouver), and have been offered an admission. Do you think I should study in UBC or HKU or UST? I am so sorry for posing a lot of questions :(

@chemplex
did you get admitted to the ust? i am only applying on my as level and a level prediction.

@monica 14…UBC…if you can afford it … definitively.

@aditya496 Oh UBC? May I know why UBC over UST/HKU??:)

@monica14:

UBC and HKU/UST are all basically on the same level in terms of int’ll recognition. UBC would open more doors in the Western world and is also somewhat well known in Asia, while HKU/UST will basically confine you to Asia - but in terms of Asian recognition is great.

I would decide based on future destinations as well as your preference of study environment. UBC is easily less of an Asian pressure cooker with a healthy social life (and Vancouver is a nice city too) while HK is polluted, cramped, competitive, and the universities are very time-intensive and work-intensive, but HK is a much more exciting city to explore if you have the money and the time.

If you are not Cantonese you will easily have a much healthier social life in UBC. If you are Cantonese you would be fine in HK, but I would question why you want to go to uni in Hong Kong in the first place instead of seeing the world.

@dubyawhy Thank you very much for your input, I really appreciate it I guess you are right. Actually, I really do want to go UBC, but it is so far away from my home country; HKU/UST is much closer… Well, I guess I am letting go of HKU… If I receive an admission from HKUST then HKUST it is
Thanks ;)

HKUST or UBC? I would choose HKUST without even thinking.

Look UBC is pretty good on the international rankings and has a good reputation, especially in India, but if those rankings were any good then IIT would at least be in the top 20 worldwide.

Anyways, around 12 students from my school currently attend UBC and 6 from my class, me included, have been accepted. You may think that all these people must be really qualified applicants right? WRONG. Of these 5, four failed in at least 1 subject in one of the 3 terms of high school and these 4 also get all their internal assessment IB work done by paying off professionals to write it for them. I know for a fact that some of the students from my school already attending UBC made hefty(really hefty) donations to UBC and this is part of the reason they were accepted.

Maybe UBC just accepted the worst of the worst applicants from my class but none of the people who are already there are anything great either. Their final IB scores range from 24(yes the passing grade if i am not wrong) to 36.

I know that HKU gives an conditional offer of ~36 for engineering as some of my friends have already been accepted and I am assuming HKUST also gives something similar.

It may also be true that since UBC is a large school they accept most applicants including some really really smart ones and some fairly average. The 5th guy who I have not mentioned above is truly excellent at everything and he was accepted too.

If I sound a bit like a jerk, it was not my intention. Attending any college itself is a privilege not everyone achieves and UBC is probably one of the best colleges in the world but in my opinion, which is heavily influenced by my personal experiences which are probably wildly different from other peoples’, HKU/ST is just a better place to be at.

Also if youre wondering, I dont count myself to be anything extraordinary either. I am just an average applicant who has already gotten into UBC but is worried about not being able to meet the conditions HKU/ST set for admission (MATHS HL 6!!!)

@expertelder

nope, i’m still waiting for their replies, 3A* and 1A, been checking my emails everyday

@monica14 I’d join UBC over HKU/HKUST any day irrespective of what Jackrabbit420 said. In every university there are some students who can be classified as “Admission mistakes”(Ivies included), that doesn’t imply those universities are inferior. HKU/HKUST are running on an utilitarian approach(similar to almost all Asian universities). UBC over HKU/HKUST because of cultural and intellectual diversity, better opportunities all over the world, much better job placements(in terms of starting salary), and international exposure. If you can afford UBC, go for it. If not, HKU/HKUST are quite good at least in Asia.
@jackrabbit420 IITs don’t fare well in global rankings because of many reasons(i.e Poor Infrastructure, poor research(primarily due to poor funding), no international students, not international professors, no undergraduate research focus, and the list goes on.) IITs might have some of the most academically awesome students in the world but at the end of the day the end up wasting the only resource they have(i.e. Good students).
Just because a college is more selective doesn’t mean that it’s better. Judging by your logic, NYUAD should be better than Ivies, Stanford, UChicago, MIT, Caltech, etc. But, all of us know it’s nowhere near the NYU itself.

Hey guys! has anybody applied for dentistry in Hong Kong this year? it’s March already, and even though I’ve done well for my A levels, haven’t heard anything. i took bio, chem, math and economics and A for all. my choices are still under consideration, does this mean I’m not shortlisted for the interview stage?

@ksingh, hey i’ve got my complete A-level results as well, applied for HKU/UST engineering; still no reply for now and did not get called for interview

@jackrabbit420 Thank you very much for giving me a new perspective… What you said might be true… I will surely take that into consideration… But the thing with UBC is that there is ‘life’ in that university… I do not know if this is just a stereotype but I think most asian universities are too focused on academics.

@thunderboltsid Thanks for sharing your opinion with me. I do agree with you regarding the cultural diversity and the career opportunity in UBC. And if I may add, UBC is located in Vancouver, an extremely beautiful city! haha… So I guess 4 years of study will be very enjoyable in UBC hahah

@chemplex how did your As go? maybe they consider us later
