Anyone received offer from HKUST for engineering?
I got an offer from HKUST engineering! Problem is - they want an answer by February 28, otherwise the offer will become “invalid”, but all US decisions come out late March. I don’t want to commit to Hong Kong if i get into a great school in US. Do you think i can ask them to extend the deadline?
@ynwa25 I doubt that… a student’s commitment to make the decision before other schools <-- that is exactly what they want to see by setting the deadline on 2/28. They want to make sure that the student they gave an offer to is willing to give up other choices (even better choices) to come to their school. Another problem would be the issue of fairness. If one students gets an extension, other students who have applied to American Universities will also ask for extensions which will turn into a load of work for the admissions office of HKUST.
@ynwa25 If you applied to top universities and you are quite confident, I think you should just give up HKUST because US universities are way better than Asian universities for Engineering
@Karimessi that’s true… thank you for replying! @arrerrte i wish i was confident, that’s the problem. my grades got me into HKUST but for US universities it’s so much more than that. anyway, thanks for your answer!
I think I’m gonna decline HKU’s offer. There are many problems that I see to this. If I graduate as an engineer from hku the only place I’ll be getting to work at are core engineering firms in hong kong or at most shenzhen or singapore, and that honestly is very boring, I like mechanical engineering but I don’t like it as much I love Physics and Biology(Pure sciences), I really think I’m just being blinded by the prospect of living in hong kong, it obviously is a big thing for me as I’m not rich and I’ve seen hard times all my life, it surely excites me to think that from one day having to walk my way to school in the harsh sun to working and living and hong kong, but it won’t be much fun if I don’t love what I do, I can also get into investment banking(brother’s contacts) but that won’t be possible in hku as all hk banks will require me to speak canto. So all in all, I think it’s just gonna be 4 years of hong kong and then just the daily 9-5 which I won’t like.
I’ve also applied to hku science as 2nd choice but I’ve got more rigorous and better options which won’t be in a place like hong kong but will make me a better scientist/researcher than I’ll be at hku.
hasta la vista Hong Kong!
@aryanj123 Wherever you choose to go, good luck mate! I’m still waiting for my offer from HKU Engineering and Actuarial Science (3rd and 1st Options)… I’m starting to feel that I’ve been declined.
I finally got an offer from HKU today! Now, I guess I’ll just have to continue on studying for the final exam and just decide whether I want to attend HKU or HKUST.
@yourelove congratulations on your acceptance to these elite universities. I wonder if you received any type of scholarship from HKU or HKUST.
Congrats! I don’t know how many days there are left till the end of mid-february but I hope I get my offers from HKU in a couple of days
@michael9898 Thanks! I’ve received scholarship offers from both HKU and HKUST. The specifics really depends on my Final Score, but for HKU: 45 (Full tuition plus accommodation plus a living allowance), 44 (Renewable Full tuition), 42-43 (Renewable Half tuition), 40-41 ( A guaranteed exchange scholarship of unto HK30,000)/ HKUST: 45 (Full tuitionplus a living allowance), 43-44 (Renewable Full tuition), 40-42 (Full tuition, one-off) 39-38 (HKD15,000, one-off), 37-36 (HKD10,000, one-off). Hope this helps!
@yourlove what course did you apply for? and what was your predicted?
@whalsdn1201 I’ve applied for business for both schools, and my predicted was a 41/45.
Does anyone know whether international accepted students to HKU science faculty are invited to join YSS (young scientist scheme) at the time they are accepted or later (if you are qualified to join)?
I wonder when are they going to review the American Patterned applications?
Has anyone heard from either of the universities for the science courses?
I’ve received my firm offer for the MSBA program via email. They are sending me the admission package soon.
Heard from HKUST for the science undergraduate course, didn’t get in Good luck!
Hey guys, I’ve been admitted to HKUST’s business school but as an international student, I’m hesitant to go there because of the lack of diversity among the student population (only 8% of students are from outside of HK or mainland China). I currently attend a very multinational school in an extremely diverse nation, so this would be a huge change for me. How big of an issue would you say this is? Any tips/suggestions?
@sroy17 They sent you a mail stating that youre not acceped?
