HKU or HKUST

After few reviews and consideration i gave up HKU and accepted HKUST instead for BBA… I have to agree with some of the points made in earlier posts about HKU admission management and online system is not at par with HKUST. Yes, we all know HKU has lot more applications to handle and all that though they should put more resources and better procedures in place being world class university… Few things that put me off 1) Offer was made in online system yet no email for few days 2) Asking IB students to have min 6 out of 7 in English A SL PLUS overall 6.5 in IELTS whereas min score required for HKDSE was 4 out of max 7 (I have nothing against local students but got to admit IB English standards are definitely higher than HKDSE and should not require IELTS)… 3) Email offering grand scholarship of HKD3k was pathetic to say the least with multiple weird conditions set in whereas HKUST was straight forward min 10K based on IB result 4) I inquired HKU about IELTS requirement and diff with HKDSE but as expected the reply was standard computer generated gibberish like we assess each individual based on bla bla… I know all these things have nothing to do with academic excellence or cultural environment it has to offer but it does matter in small way when other Uni shows excellent administration from making an offer, proactively arranging student ambassador and assistant admission manager and timely response to any queries (5 Star to HKUST)… Not to mention i even found HKUST website more up-to-date and online application system better than HKU (Design and look outdated and cant even see what docs have been uploaded)… Anyway, my main reasons to select HKUST was 1) higher ranking for business school 2) Little bit of so called ‘Stress and Tension’ is better than more fun and less pressure  3) Sometimes upcoming and growing places are better than well-know overrated places… Cheers

@jackjar I totally agree with all your reasoning. It’s not that HKU was disappointing, but HKUST was extremely well organized and welcoming. Especially after getting the offer how they assigned each of the applicants with their student ambassador was very helpful.I was able to get a really good insight about the school, and also ask realistic questions that can be only answered by the current students there.

Just emailed HKU to ask them whether the fast track results have all come out, and this is how they replied back me.

“If you have not received an offer from us by mid-February 2017, your application will be further considered under our Main Round Admissions Scheme.”

So I guess I’ll have to wait until mid-February to find out whether I’ve been deferred or not! Hope this helps :))

@yourelove Thank you so much for sharing the correct information!

Has any Indian with CBSE or ISC or Stateboard academic credentials received scholarship from HKUST? I had a conversation with a student ambassador at HKUST. He said HKUST has stopped offering scholarships to Indians because they are getting more applications from India and most of them are able to afford the tuition fee. HKUST has offered scholarships so far in order to increase the international diversity. 'They’d offer scholarships for students from countries where less number of students apply. I receieved offer from hkust for RMBI as that is my first preference. The conditions are low, but when compared to last year it is pretty high. It says 90% over all and 90% above in mathematics.

@kowshikbalaji just tell them that you’ll need one. I think they’ll offer it to you if you score high anyways.

@yourlove Love you bro! thanks for asking them about that.

Has anyone received an offer from HKUST recently? especially for Engineering? :frowning:

My friend received offer for HKUST Comp Sci engineering though his IB PG are in the range of 44-45…

Got my offer from HKU engineering today! Full tuition scholarship!! (they want a aggregate 96% in boards) Yahoo!

@aryanj123 Congrats! :slight_smile:

@aryanj123 Too good an offer worth waiting for! I did my HKU interview in Dec and my app is under consideration. Could you please share your stats - which board, scores etc… Thanks in advance

Hi guys, I am looking for advice. I have received nearly all my offers from UK, when I will receive all of them I will have two weeks to accept and offer, however my main aim is study on either HKU or HKUST, I applied for the main round engineering and I am still waiting for any response. I am not sure if I will receive one, before the UK acceptance date, do you think If i would contact HKUST and HKU they could send their decision earlier? I am not sure what to do ;/

And one more question, do you know if all students will have interview for engineering?

They’ll most probably cut you out if you ask them to decide earlier. And for the expected date of results of main round, don’t expect earlier than mid march maybe for engineering.

Did anyone who applied for biomedicical science in HKU receive an offer?

Has anyone received an offer from HKUST recently? for Engineering?

@wrobel11 I think that depends entirely on which schools in the UK you’ve applied to. If you’ve got into Engineering of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, I doubt that HKU would dare take the chance of losing you… so HKU would most definitely give you an offer. But if you got into lower ranking schools with lower requirements maybe you shouldn’t take the chance. If you need to accept an offer before the results are out, accept their offer, pay the acceptance fee (don’t know how much that’s going to cost you) and just wait for HKU to give you an offer. Just to be safe!

That’s what I did. I paid 3000 US dollars to HKUST and accepted the offer but I am looking forward to going to HKU Engineering as well, if that turns out well.

Anybody have an idea about when HKU will hand out Science offers?

@aryanj123 HKU mainround offers starts in March
