Thanks for that link Sax. Very interesting letter. Good luck on your RAV sale and if you don’t mind, let us know how close you get to a fair deal. Toyota blue book values have dropped a couple of percentage points over the last weeks over this matter. I feel pretty stuck with my '06 HH at this point and just see it’s value going down, down, down. Plus it loss it’s heating ability in the last month so will have to pay for that: only 4 years old. I have NEVER had a new car with as many problems as this one in over 30 years.

Sax-might want to make sure your bill of sale indicates that the only warranty you offer is a clear title; spouse is atty. You never know just what some atty’s might try to pull at this point–we know that class action is in the works already!

Both H & I had toyotas that were great cars- electronics is one of the more buggy parts of autos nowdays- plus for a single car- hard/$$$$$$ to diagnose.

I probably wouldn’t buy a Prius, but in general, I think Toyota has been a good company.

Investigators on the runaway Prius have found that the brake wear patterns don’t match the story of the driver. I have a feeling that this is going to turn out to be a hoax.

*You might as well hold off on most flying:

FAA requires inspection of 600 Boeing 737s | Seattle Times Newspaper*

My H generally insists on flying Boeing- however- I pointed out to him, that Boeing is hardly loyal to it’s workers- so why should he go out of his way to fly their planes?

737s have a long history of various problems and there have been several crashes involving them. I generally prefer 757s, 767s and 747s (if they are still flying).

seiclan: My RAV 4 was not recalled either (being made in Japan). However they have not figured out what the real prblem is. It is most likely a software problem in the cars computer.

They will eventually find out the problem and fix it. So I will be out a few thousand bucks. I am lucky. No one I love is dead or in jail (like that poor guy who was blamed for killing another family.) I plan on keeping it that way.

Am driving a 2007 Camry that was recalled. Have never had any problems w/Toyota and will continue to drive/buy them. S1 currently drives our 92 Camry with no problems other than the paint is showing it’s age.

Toyota will come out of this with time. I think the gov’t is making such a big deal of it since the gov’t owns GM and is in competition with a better car company, Toyota…

Friday I was at the rental car counter in Seattle and the Hertz guy gave me a choice between a Nissan Sentra and a Toyota Corolla. I chose the Nissan. I think the damage from this will be huge and long-lasting.

Multiple Toyota owner here , including a Lexus and Scion. No problems ever with any of them. I did have a Previa that my former nanny ruined though when she continued to drive it when it was overheating.

I would still buy them again.

Interesting points, sax and TheMom…

My husband actually will not buy a domestic or Mexican made Toyota …swears they are not as well made as those made in Japan

Sax-What kind of car are you looking to purchase as a replacement for your Rav4? We own a 2009 with a J-VIN (Japanese made) and have had no issues either. As we are just finishing payment for our only student to graduate this May, we are hedging on just what to do; a few thousand dollars is a lot to us right now! This whole Toyota issue has just been a real topsy-turvy problem–you almost don’t know what to believe! Plus, we feel that there are a lot of cars with issues including those that could cause death, etc. We are trying to remain positive…and hopeful.

We bought our S a Nissan Rogue, he wanted the FJ. The Rogue has been a great little SUV for him and much less exspensive! I do have a 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser with 165,000 miles on it, love that truck. I don’t drive it very often, usually when I have to take the dog somewhere or pick up garden stuff! I have a “clean” SUV for everyday.

Having driven multiple Toyota products (both Toyota and Lexus) for many years with ZERO problems I find the timing and particularly the degree of furor being raised by Congress to be highly suspicious. Given the huge amount of federal money paid out to both GM and Chrysler to save them from ruin while Toyota continued to be the most successful and profitable automaker makes me wonder if there is a smoking gun somewhere in all this mess. The supposed problems are only occurring in US built cars…hmmmmm…

…and now the supposed Prius problem cannot be duplicated by ANYONE and Toyota has finally decided to fight back.

To me it reeks of a hatchet job designed to give GM and Chrysler some breathing room while they try to reshape and rebuild their companies. Can anyone say corporate espionage?

I’d buy any Toyota product tomorrow. They are and have been for at least the last 25 years the best built and most reliable cars on the road with terrific resale value and trouble free driving. I have never had any Toyota or Lexus that I owned in for anything but routine maintenance the entire time that I owned them. I can’t say that for ANY other car I have driven including BMW and Mercedes.

Note: I didn’t see The Mom’s comments until I had posted this; glad to see that more people than me are suspicious of the whole tawdry affair.

I think my chances of getting hit by a drunk driver, getting hit by a bus, being rear-ended by a powermom who’s talking on her phone while driving, and injuring myself while rollerblading are vastly more probable than the chances of something going wrong with my Toyota product.

(I’ve never been stung by a bee, so I’m not sure whether or not I’m allergic to them, but I’m not going to insist upon carrying around a shot of epinephrine, either.)
