Holiday songs that drive you CRAZY!!!

I get choked up every time I hear “Snoopy’s Christmas”.

Swear to God.

You can get the whole “Charlie Brown’s Christmas” soundtrack now on itunes for $4.99.

I love White Christmas, Carol of the Bells, the Barbra Streisand Christmas Album, Johnny Mathis’ renditions of the old songs, and from WW2, I’ll Be Home For Christmas. My mother loved the last song because there was someone she lost during the war. Perhaps loved is the wrong word…moved. And now, since both my parents are gone when I hear that song I cry…

Posts #93 and #94 …I am familiar with John Denver, but the other songs must be country music ?
Who wants to listen to THAT ?? ;(

I concur on that John Denver tune. Now in the digital age, I have hust deleted “Please Daddy. Don’t Get Drunk this Christmas” from my playlist.

What was John Denver thinking about? Otherwise his Christmas album is lovely.

Agreed! Put me at the top of the list of people who HATE “Christmas Shoes!”
Mother is on her deathbed, so Dad sends child out alone to go SHOPPING. Nice going fella! Sappy, maudlin, cloying… dreadful!

Also agree that Madonna’s ‘Santa Baby’ is pretty cringe-worthy.

Never liked "Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ as a kid. Didn’t like being threatened and warned, even mildly…

Also adding the Jimmy Durante version of ‘Frosty the Snowman.’ Couldn’t stand Frosty’s voice, and the part when the children sing “Thumpity-thump-thump…” It just bugged me. Always thought the cartoon Christmas special it came from was crummy too.

I don’t mind George Michael’s “Last Christmas,” but my daughers’ hate it because it seems to be played every 5 minutes. D2 (10) didn’t believe me today when I told her it was sung by a man.

Despite all my complaining, I really do love Christmas music, esp. the older stuff sung by Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, etc. Used to like the records that the service stations would give out with snow tires each winter.

Also love a lot of what we heard in church growing up – Hark the Herald, The First Noel, The Snow Lay on the Ground, and esp. Christmas on the Sea, which was supposedly Teddy Roosevelt’s favorite Christmas song. Wish I could find it to download.

Ah - and have to add on the “good” list–
pretty much everything from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Worst holiday songs: The Chipmunks “hoola-hoop” song–I couldn’t stand the Chipmunks even back when I was a little kid. I also agree with whoever mentioned Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime”–the lyrics and melody are pretty cheesy.

Best Holiday songs(I have them both on my iPod): Stevie Nicks’ version of “Silent Night” on the “A Very Special Christmas” album. Even though I’m not normally a Stevie Nicks fan, I just thought her rendition of Silent Night is lovely. I also really like Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s “I Believe in Father Christmas”.

And just to represent my own religion, I really like Ben Kweller’s version of “Rock of Ages”(also on the iPod, from the CD, “The O.C. Mix 3”)–sweet and pared down to just his vocals and acoustic guitar accompaniment.

Every year we watch the last Letterman before Christmas just to hear Paul do his yearly impersonation of Cher singing “Oh Holy Night” HILARIOUS. It must be watched.
He has Darlene Love singing a “wall of sound” Christmas hit as well. Just checked the schedule—it will be the night of 12-23.

1 worst Christmas song ever: CHRISTMAS SHOES! UGH! Sappy, maudlin… why does a dying woman (apparently in bed, covered with a blanket) need shoes??? Isn’t there enough real sadness in the world that we don’t have to invent a story about a little boy buying shoes for his dying mother on Christmas eve? Boo, hiss.

2 & 2a) Dominic the Donkey, and Feliz Navidad. UGH. I can’t decide which is worse.

3) Grandma got Run Over - it was funny 25 years ago. Not any more.

4) Rockin around the Christmas Tree

5) Last Christmas - it was awful when George Michael did it, why would someone re-do it?

6) Chipmunks

On a positive note, here’s a big shout-out for Straight No Chaser. D introduced me to it. They are incredible. I’ve gotta look for a tour schedule. Go to iTunes right now and check it out!

Also love Trans Siberian Orchestra. And the Bare Naked Ladies version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

I also like the BNL version of God Rest…
The Briant Setzer Orchestra wasn’t around here for their annual Christmas show here on LI, sadly, but we saw the David Benoit quartet doing excerpts from A Charlie Brown Christmas and a lot of other stuff. I’m not a big fan of jazz, but we really enjoyed it. Good music, especially good LIVE music, is always sort of exhilarating, I think.

And maybe it’s time to send the result of this thread to the heads of all the radio stations that insist on playing Christmas Shoes every half hour or so. It belongs (along with Afternoon Delight) right up there with the Worst Songs Ever Written–

I am thankful that I have never heard the song that keeps coming up in this thread
Christmas Shoes sounds terrible

OK, another holiday song that’s tacky but somehow never gets old and is still funny - Adam Sandler is on the radio right now singing The Hannukah song. Can’t be in a bad mood with that song playing!

I like the Hannukah song !

Ditto on the Hanukkah Song–I think it’s quite funny.
Haven’t heard the Bare Naked Ladies in a while…

I do enjoy Brave Combo’s klezmer version of “Must Be Santa.”

I love the Hanukkah song! Never heard the Christmas Shoes (and do not want to, based on the reviews).
I really like “War is Over” by John Lennon.

Our principal clarinetist introduced me to a klezmer Nutcracker by a group called Shirim a couple of years ago - it is awesome! It’s now a part of our holiday playlist…

Klezmer?? Will look it up online…

I like the Adam Sandler song too- and don’t like the Chipmunks-
I do like the Bing Crosby/David Bowie duo of Little Drummer Boy & John Lennon- plus the Carpenters <B
