We are wondering if anyone else was looking at both Barrett Honors at Arizona State and South Carolina Honors College and could do a compare and contrast for us? Both seem amazing!
Thanks for any input.
I think with any Honors College - look at the curriculums first and foremost. Too many say I want Honors. And apply.
My son applied to some but not all. Some were too ‘humanities based.’ Others don’t have early registration or nicer housing etc.
I think more than Honors - look at the schools. They are both great but different.
Honors wise ASU is huge. And my guess is easier to get into. I don’t think either is hardest. My daughter got into SC and UGA but not FSU, as an example. I think size matters.
U of SC is 2300 kids. ASU Barrett is triple - so like ASU is enormous comparatively speaking as a school, so is Honors.
ASU is $1k per semester. U of SC $575.
Check each curriculum wise - what do they require (both a thesis), is there housing (yes)? Better scheduling ? Do the courses offered interest etc ?
These are two great, of many Honors Colleges. My daughter declined U of SC for another SC public but just went to the U of SC Honors College DC Semester (all the in state schools use U of SC for DC
ASU has a different Washington DC type option but reading about it not tied to Honors.
Barrett is on each ASU campus (4) around Phoenix. I believe U of SC on the main.
I imagine they are both fantastic but likely not identical.
Good luck.
Ps you might have seen this article. It’s not a contrast but both are listed.
Lots of info on each school’s page. But beyond Honors these truly are vastly different schools.
Solid advice from @tsbna44.
Different cultures due to geographic locations.
After acceptance, visit both prior to making a decision.
The Honors College at the University of Arizona should also be considered.
What I love about U of A is the dorm. It’s awesome. Dining hall on the bottom - gym and counseling center adjacent. I wanted to move in!!!
It doesn’t get the attention that ASU or U of SC - or the other top Honors schools like Kansas, Texas, Rutgers, Penn State, etc. but the facility in Tucson is great at least if that’s important to the student.
But kids should truly check curriculums. It shouldn’t just be - if I get into Honors…which is why we read stories on here of kids applying to some, but not others (as my kid did as well). They are checking the overall and not just relying on - it’s top ranked.
