Okay–

so i just received my UBit name and it is terrible. lets say my name is john jason smith… the UBit name i received is jjsmit@buffalo.edu— is it REALLY that difficult to change it to jjsmith@buffal.edu since their isn’t another person with that name in the entire school (i looked in the directory)??? So, my question is do you think it would be okay for me to call up the IT office at UB and see if they would change it (it is very confusing-- i have a feeling that a ton of people are going to get it confused when they send me emails)

it wouldn’t hurt to ask… i say really funny ubit names. like today, mrlee and .hmmm can’t remember others but one of my friends told me she got to choose her ubit name so i don’t see why it isn’t possible,… let me know if that works. i wanna change mine too lol

I used to work for the IT department and I’ve got bad news for you. You cannot change your IT name, just like you cannot change your UB Person Number. Chances are that someone has had or currently has the name you want. UB NEVER reassigns old IT names. As long as you are affiliated with UB, your IT name will stay the same. Take me for example, my IT name is [first initial][middle initial][last name][sequence number]@buffalo.edu. I am graduating this year. If I return for grad school or get a job at UB in the future, my old IT name is reactivated.

Also, you can’t choose your IT name at UB, it is assigned based on your government name at the time of your affiliation with the University, and what’s available when the IT department creates new accounts. Besides, having worked as an IT Consultant [computer lab assistant] I’ve seen some jacked up IT names.

constantIllusion-- Jw if maybe they could do [first initial][middle initial][last name][sequence number]@buffalo.edu??

sorry for asking

If your first name, MI, and last name put together are more than 8 characters long then no. Like I said in the last post, you’re stuck with your IT name for as long as you are affiliated with UB.

thanks for the responses everyone!! im just dealing with it, it isn’t a huge deal but thanks for the help hahahaaha!!
