Hosiery

A small PSA - if clothes with waistbands always irritate your stomach, you might have something called pelvic congestion.

I want to know how to keep a footliner in place. In my experience, it takes about two steps before the footliner is all balled up under my foot. Are you telling me this doesn’t happen to everyone?

I wear my flats without hosiery as fashion dictates but I think the inside of the shoe wears out faster than if I were wearing some kind of hosiery.

And I wish I could buy a nice loafer or flat that is fleece lined for winter. If you know of any, let me know.

Would adding a sheepskin or wool insole help? Superfeet makes awesome ones.

@Wellspring - Do you have the foot liners with the rubbery section inside the heel area? That kind stays in place for me.

I would rather my legs freeze then ever wear pantyhose ever again in my life.

Yes footliner with whatever it is in the heel, no luck. I have shearling sole inserts but have yet to find a shoe that will fit both those and my feet. Still searching.

@preironic One of the delightful things about being an adult is the freedom not to care about what others think. I think that a dress or skirt without hose looks too casual for my workplace – admittedly a conservative Catholic school. Even if it weren’t part of the dress code, I would be wearing those pantyhose except for summer school.

Right now I’m wearing a floral dress, black pantyhose and pumps as I prepare for the school day. Yesterday I wore a skirt suit with pantyhose.

And at the risk of being offensive, if the strangers here online don’t agree-- or even look down-- on that choice, it’s of absolutely no consequence to me.

The only question here was “do women not wear hoseiry anymore” and the answer was “for the most part women do not wear sheer hose anymore because they are out of style and no longer considered a necessity for even almost all very conservative places or occasions.”

A Catholic school is probably one of the last hold outs in terms of dress code requiring hose.

One is free to dress out of style. No one disagrees with that.bAnd I believe that one should not be a slave to style. The main disagreements are only over whether they keep your legs warm (I’m in the “no “ crowd) and whether they make your legs look better ( I’m in the “not as often as they make your legs look worse…either because they are a weird color of “nude” or because they are snagged or ripped or creating weird lines under your clothes or stretched out” crowd. Which opinion I base on many years of wearing them every day amd seeing most other women in my office and the courts wear them. I believe that sheer hose are going the way of white dress gloves and pillbox hats. Sure you might see them on royalty or as some retro thing worn by hipsters. But as the years go by they will no longer be worn by anyone else. Which was the OP’s question.

The slipping foot liner is an issue. I think I often buy three varieties before I find one that works best- and then I can’t ever find that one again! I do want to try the SmartWool liners - thought they might be a little warmer and perhaps a little better gripping.

I am not fond of my legs without pantyhose so on those exceedingly rare occasions when I wear a dress (formal event or family funeral), I wear pantyhose purchased at a department store. Hope they don’t stop selling them! Do all of you have great legs without any veins or bruises? I have thought about trying self tanner or maybe a tanning place (legs only) to not have to wear hose, but have not gotten around to it. The problem then is footwear - hard to wear sandals wtih hose. I know they make the toeless kind, but haven’t seen it in the stores for a long time and the ones I tried in the past didn’t seem to stay in place very well.

As to the footies - I have large feet and the no-shows tend to slip off very quickly. I have learned to tolerate no socks in the summer but would love to find true no shows that stay on. Much more comfortable. And I have to wear socks of some sort if I have to walk more than a short distance.

Your comment reminds me of things I used to see in old Women’s magazines regarding the death of the dress glove when I was doing research for a paper I wrote as part of my senior dissertation about the changes in fashion in the 20 th century. Why would one want to go without gloves on dressy occasions and have to wory about how their ha do and nails looked was some of the thinking. As fashion changes there is less worry about bearing less than pefect parts than their once was.

I may wear stockings if I am IN a wedding party. Most of the rest of the time I don’t. When in doubt or when I’m cold, I wear slacks (with thermals as needed).

Around here (HI), stockings haven’t been worn much by many of us, though I do see them worn from time to time, especially among the very young and very old. .

We have high heat and high humidity but frigid A/C in many buildings.

I rarely wear skirts or dresses or even shorts. I simply don’t like how my legs look bare, and I’m much more comfortable having them covered.

When the weather cools, I will sometimes wear a skirt & opaque tights.

My toe nails are sort of gnarly too. Two of them look like they are going to fall off (hiking?), so I also avoid dressy sandals.

I’m more of a jeans & T-shirt person anyways, and I rarely need to get dressed up for work or any other occasion.

I always liked good hosiery that smoothed my legs & served as Spanx before Spanx were invented.

Laughing at the comment about hose going the way of dress gloves & the pillbox hat…so true!

Um, yes. I have great legs. Don’t need hose to cover them.

Most of us don’t have perfect legs, I’m guessing. If you get the right pair of hose, they aren’t noticeable unless you look very closely. I wear them, and I like them. If you are judging me, that’s your problem, not mine.

I also have a problem with the little footie shoe liners moving around after two steps. I bought a variety of them a couple of years ago because wearing shoes without socks isn’t comfortable or hygienic. But nothing worked – every type I tried slipped off my heel (even the ones with the rubbery stuff on the heel) and wound up scrunched around my toes. And I don’t have big feet – only a size 5 1/2.

The fashion world inventors are focusing on wrong things. Footies that slip are apparently a big pain point for footwear consumer. I would gladly pay sock price for such footies!

@BunsenBurner

Business idea!

Whoever gets this right is going to be a Shark Tank star.

Just like the rest of me, my legs are not perfect. Not awful but not perfect. But perfect is not my expectation. So no hose. You might see the imperfections of a non-perfect leg but they will be shaven, they will have a little color (I have more of an olive skin tone) and the legs I have are a product of many hours of exercise during the week to get them to this level of imperfect.
