I like my legs, although they are a very pasty shade of white. I have an icky nerve bundle on the back of one knee that kind of looks like a nipple, but I don’t worry about it showing … I don’t have to look at it.
I yam what I yam.
I wear leggings and low boots under some dresses/tunics, knee-high hose under skirts or fancy dresses (I tend to wear long-length, so knee highs work). Was barelegged for S1’s wedding, but it was August.
I’m relieved that I’m not the only one with a footie issue! I have a 2A width and 4A heel, and the footies slide off and wind up under my foot, leaving me with blisters on my heels.
The reality is that I wear shoes for comfort, not looks. No heels. My knees, ankles and back can’t take it. When I find something that’s cute, comfortable, and in my size, I grab them.
I find that leggings stay up but tights, even more than panty hose, tend to roll down, which drives me mad. I am very straight up and down through the hips and waist.
I’ve given up wearing skirts and dresses entirely during the cold months. Which is too bad.
I am also astonished by the rarity of dressier dresses with any kind of a sleeve. Pasty white goose-pimpled arms and legs hanging out in mid winter is not a good look. Designers seem to think that everyone likes in Southern California.
But that’s another thread.
I don’t know …. since I hit menopause I barely ever wear anything that covers my shoulders.
In the old days, when I wore pantyhose, I would wear underpants on top, to keep them in place. Am I the only one who,did this?
Never. I wear leggings in the winter with knit dresses.
I didn’t read all the responses, but for those who think pantyhose is necessary because you don’t like the feel of bare feet in shoes, check out the liners that are just for that purpose. They are the best!
@Consolation I am the same shape and have the same problem with tights and pantyhose. I also have that problem with shapewear. I even sometimes have it with my exercise pants. I also have uneven hips and that doesn’t help.
Add me to those who liners don’t work. They never stay on my heel. The Smartwool ones work the best but even those aren’t great.
@bookworm – I used to wear thigh high stockings with the elastic bands. So I get all fancy dressed up for some shindig and by the time I reach the front door of the building from the parking lot one of my stockings is slipping down. And down.
Duck around corner to pull it up. Go in. And it’s slipping again, tug again–barely made it to the bathroom before it was around my knee. Took them off, Stuck in my purse and never wore the things again.
LOL-- shapewear rolling down is not pretty. You start out all slink and sexy and end up with a two inch rope outline around your waist. Don’t ask me how I know.
I am who I am and present myself that way. Belly fat and facial wrinkles and all. No slimwear. No make up. No hair dye.
Accept me for who I am so I don’t have to worry about what you may think if you really knew me.
I’m going to a Halloween dance tonight…dressed as a witch…and I’m wearing…Black Hose!
@Thumper1, #35 drew me in.
I haven’t even gotten to the end of this thread yet, but just had to comment after so many entries, opinions and perspectives had me feeling like we were all sitting around in a lodge in big comfy chairs, fires blazing, mugs or goblets in hand, chatting away.
I love [just got to @ skieurope’s entry] pantyhose by the way. I just so seldom have anyplace to go which requires I get “dressed up”.
Nope, I’m happy I will never be a shapewear maven.
I’m in decent shape and glad to be. Like @KKmama — I’m fine with my hair, my own skin without cosmetics and no stockings.
Socks are great with walking shoes. I’ve never had luck with peds or slipper socks either.
I have skinny, bony legs. I also live in Maine. When it’s cold and I have to wear a dress or skirt, I wear fleece-lined tights or leggings (or yoga pants) under the skirt.
I started my first grown up job in 1982. It had the standard dress code for women at the time, wool suit, panty hose and heels. I hated each and every day I had to wear hose. At the time I was 5’8" and about 118 lbs soaking wet. I still have a few clothing items from those days - and my waist must have been about 23". And guess what - even queen sized hose caused a tourniquet level compression right on the midsection. I wound up trying just about everything to make them less miserable. I cut the elastic waist band in several sections, I tried rolling them onto themselves and wearing the tourniquet portion on my hips. I tried stretching them over the back of chairs. And nothing helped. I had stomach aches and digestive issues for years due to those darned things.
Left that position in 1986 - for the wilds of Silicon Valley and a very lax dress code. I’d still wear hose for customer meetings, but not at other times. It was like being released from prison.
Now ( 15 lbs heavier and proportions a bit different) I wear WIDE waist band leggings or very soft tights - again with a soft elastic band. I prefer fancy workout tights/leggings like those by Athlete or Title Nine with the cutout ‘lace’ style bottoms. They offer compression in the legs but not the gut ( and I still have a pretty reasonable waistline, a number of inches less than the hips).
If I’m every caught in a pair of panty hose again it will be because it’s been inflected as a sort of inhuman punishment.
And forgetta -about Spanx, body shapers or underwire bras. There is no reason -ever - to squeeze and press and bind myself into anything.
^^I love this post - describes the situation so similar to my own!
@dietz199 do you have any links to the wide waist band leggings or soft tights you prefer?
Costco carries a ‘French terry’ legging this time of year. Their Maggie tights have a wonderful feel with a 1.5" or so elastic band covered in the material.
Lululemon Align pants. High wasted with a wide waistband. My favorite shapewear.
I still remember how gloriously freeing panty hose were after suffering with a garter belt.
