Hosiery

I have to say I do like textured stockings. Loved fishnets as a kid despite the marks they left when you took them off.

Count me among those who hate the “no-sock” feeling. I wear pantyhose all year to work if I wear a dress or skirt, or tights in the winter. Our dress code technically requires it (in a hospital), but many of us in nonclinical areas flout that rule without penalty (because our director, postmenopausal but still hot all the time, goes bare-legged, and often bare-armed). I follow the rule because my office is cold in the summer! I wear knee-high nylons with pants, or socks in the winter. No pantyhose with casual dresses in warm weather. I still usually wear a slip with a dress. I’m at the point where I no longer care that I’m a dinosaur. When I was in my 40s, I still had the illusion that I was young. It helped that I had my kids late. But now that I am closing in on 60, I don’t particularly try to keep up with what is currently “done.” I just do things the way I do them.

The Allbirds feel SO good without socks (and the shoes are washable). Just sayin’

I can’t remember the last time I owned a slip. A half slip was good for preventing static cling, though.

@MomofWildChild , in some other thread you mentioned a particular brand of shoes, flats IIRC, that are popular in your office. Were those Allbirds, or something else? IIRC they were washable?

I have and wear half-slips, short and long. They are not worn that much these days but i don’t like the see-through fabrics that look fine with a 1/2 slip but a bit too much exposure without a 1/2 slip.

I hate wearing pantyhose because, even without control top, they dig into my waist so painfully. Very, very occasionally I’ll wear black ones if my outfit and the event seem to call for it but, for the most part, no hose for me. I do have pasty white lower legs. Oddly, the rest of me isn’t as ghost white. So, if I care enough (maybe for a wedding, for example), I’ll apply Jergens natural glow lotion daily for about a week in advance of wearing a dress and it gives just enough of a tint that my legs don’t attract attention for being too white.

And, in terms of liners, I’ve tried many pair as well. I have one set of no name, no idea where I bought them and wouldn’t be able find them again that work well but that doesn’t help anyone here. The others that work well enough are from loft. Just checked and this is the style that I assume is the same: https://www.loft.com/heathered-no-show-sock-set/477079?skuId=25749380&defaultColor=6653&catid=catl000026. They have a variety and some are on sale with free shipping. Or the code hooray gives 50% off but that might just be for things already on sale.

I saw my slips in storage recently. We kept Goodwill in business a month and filled an entire dumpster. I gave away all my dresses and despise panty hose. Why, oh why, did I move my slips to storage???

Spanx from S1’s wedding in there too–just in case I feel the need to torture myself in the future.

@Consolation Yes! Rothys. They are stylish and washable. Fit true to size and only available online and in their one store which is in downtown SF. I have many pairs of Rothys now- they seem to be a little bit of an addiction- and get a lot of wear out of them.

@Consolation I’m not MOWC but those were Rothy’s.

I recently bought the Rothys loafer style and went up a half size. I’ve read that people buying the pointy toe flat can go up a whole size.

Was just dressing for a formal event and decided that the bruise on the front of the pasty leg and the varicose veins on the back would be better disguised in pantyhose.

Yep, had to go out and buy them since I go barelegged in summer and wear tights in the winter. And maybe my eyesight is failing because I am getting old, but I thought they did a pretty good job of making me look more pulled together than I did without.

Nordstrom had plenty of choice, btw… And wearing them brought me back to my youth, when I wore them every day. So legs covered and a bit of time travel! Not bad for less than $10!

I wear my true size in all styles of Rothys, but I do know a couple people who have gone up 1/2 size in the pointy style. I found that after 30 minutes or so they felt just as comfortable as the round toed flats. I have never heard of anyone going up a full size- and I know a lot of people wearing Rothys now.

Do you have to buy the insoles separately with Rothys? I am confused by the ones that are sold separately.

No- but you can get extra insoles.

What if your feet are wide (only toes, not heel)?

I love the look of Rothys. How much arch support/cushioning do they have?

I am very picky about shoes. I would say very little support but extremely good cushioning. I mean, they aren’t a running shoes, but I feel like they are soft and comfortable soles. I walk and travel a lot in them and find that they feel like sneakers. Support- nope.

I also have terrible problems finding no-show shoe socks. I bought some last year and just gave them a try this weekend. They worked! I couldn’t believe it. They have that bit of silicone at the heel like many, but they also have some type of material all around the sock, and that’s what did it! Never slipped once the whole day. They are thin, and there was a little hole my toenail made, but that could just be me.

I don’t remember where I bought them, but I found them here.

@conmama: Does the elastic band make itself known when you wear them? (Itch, poke)

I’m old enough to remember garter belts, so yeah pantyhose were great! I like to buy queensize control top - even though I am not queen sized by any means. I have also been known to do the underpant thing like @bookworm. I buy tights now, but I don’t think they are an improvement in any way over pantyhose except they are less likely to run. I suspect I will soon be like my mother got to be in her old age. She just stopped wearing any kind of skirt at all. I really hate wearing shoes without socks, but made a point last spring of finding a few that didn’t give me blisters or make my feet sweat horribly. Peds don’t work at all. I’m in Hong Kong now and the younger women are wearing crop pants, cute sneakers and cute socks. I saw one today with pearls around the top.
