I agree that a hostess gift is a nice idea, but please note that some people (like myself) are extremely sensitive to the scent of flowers. Many times, co-workers have given me a lovely bouquet on my birthday. I smile, thank them, take them home, and put them right into my trash can before entering my house. I know I should probably say something but I don’t want to offend anyone.
Few years ago when we were in Paris, D1 invited a friend from London to join us for few days. We hosted her while she was with us (room and meals). She brought a very nice cashmere scarf for me. I was pleasantly surprised, and I think of the trip (and her) whenever I use the scarf.
My girls’ friends will often bring flowers or wine when they come over to our place for dinner.
The girls know how I feel about gifts, so they would coach their BFs when coming to my house.
Would you like to hear about some of the gifts I have received from others when they have stayed here?
- Gift basket of items from where the person visiting lives (I've gotten Georgia peach things, Maine maple syrup, a quilted Amish country potholders, wine from the visitors home area, woven baskets from a number of places including Africa)
- Candy, flowers, bottle of wine, craft beers.
- Homemade things...breads, cakes, candy, cupcakes, pasta, cookies, brownies.
- Purchased items...Omaha Steaks, Harry and David, Cheryl's Cookies, Popcorn.
And the things people have given me have given me good ideas for giving to others.
I stayed for a week with my sister…a week is a long time. I knew she was redecorating so I got her a gift certificate to Pier One. She was thrilled. And on my next trip, she showed me what she bought!
I will be staying with friends, and my other sister this summer. They all love New England real maple syrup…so that is what they will get.
Flowers sent. Delivery planned for the day boys arrive.
It’s very gracious of this couple, who we don’t even know, to share their home with my son and his friend. A bouquet of spring flowers is the least we can do…
Thanks for your help!
In the spirit of this thread, maybe you should send a fish head. OK, maybe not. :D/
