Hotchkiss '28

Hi everyone! I was recently accepted into Hotchkiss and will be joining as a lower mid (10th). I would really appreciate any and all advice/recommendations/tips if you are a current student, and would love to connect on socials, especially if you’re entering as a lower mid as well!!!

What’s ur ig? Im a class of 28 at hotchkiss already here!

hii tysm for replying, im just gonna send a bunch of my current questions and answer whichever ones you can!!

how do placement tests into courses work? i got an email regarding tests but they didn’t really specify what it consists of. also, what are your thoughts on the level of rigor of the courses here? im currently taking a bunch of aps but i wasn’t sure how that would compare to hotchkiss’ curriculum

what are your tips for socializing and making friends? im super nervous this because people will already have their own friend groups and im not that much of an extrovert either :sob:

what are saturday classes like? what does your daily/nightly routine often look like?

again, tysm and i hope you have a good rest of your school year!!

Hi! Im so happy to answer your questions and I cant wait to see you in the fall. For placement test you do a math placement test (which I recommend studying a little bit for since that was a mistake i made and started math at 150, but dont worry you can also retake the math placement test during orientation if you are not happy) and then you take the physics placement test to be placed in either normal or intensive physics, math also plays a factor in your physics placement. Regarding the rigor, hotchkiss doesnt offer any “AP” classes. They claim that the reason they dont is cuz most of their classes are already more challenging than APs so they cant follow the exact ap cirriculum. so dont worry about how easy the classes will be and just try to suceed in the classes you do take. As you get older the classes will get much harder anyways. Some people also still self study for APs here and take the test. In terms of socializing I highly recommend doing a sport. Doing cross country literally saved me prep year. You will already have something in common with thisgroup of people, and you will be forced to see them everyday for a long period of time. After sports many teams also do team dinner and eat dinner together right after sports. even after the season the same group still ends up talking and socializing with each other. Also commit yourself to some things outsisde of school like clubs and after check in (10 pm) sit outside and talk to your friends in the hallway. Just try to spend as little time as possible in your room and you will be fine. just use your room to sleep. saturday classes are not that bad you kinda get used to them. the start time of class is moved to 9 am so you kinda have a sleep in and you only have class until 12. also most people also have sports games on saturday so waking up in the morning helps you stay on top of things. for the schedule, I wake up at like 7:30 get ready for school which starts at 8:30 (go to breakfast if i can make it or continental in the student center) classes end at 4, you have like a different schedule everyday so use google calender. then sports from 4-6, after sports i eat dinner and then if im bored go to a club meeting. then study hall is from 8-10 for lowerclassman, and then I check in and sleep or do more hw. anyways feel free to dm me or ask me any more questions. I hope you enjoy revisit days if you are going lol.

oh wow i really appreciate the detailed response

is physics a required science for underclassmen, or are we allowed to choose our own track?

Hi! Current 2026 at Hotchkiss. Physics is required (sadly, I am not a physics/math person…) but after that you have a choice of the order you would like to take chem/bio/etc… I may be wrong but I am pretty sure you do not even need both; just three years of a lab science (e.g., if you really like chemistry, you can take chem and then orgo/inorg… don’t quote me on that tho). Lots of upperclassmen electives; I recommend looking at the course catalog (it’s on the website)!
