D has been invited to a diversity recruitment program at UW. She will be staying on campus but I will need to spend one night in a hotel. I made a reservation at Hotel Deca on Brooklyn Avenue. Has anyone stayed at this hotel? TIA :)

There are good reviews about this hotel at tripadvisor.com. You can also check the reviews at yahoo travel. I do not have any personal knowledge of the hotel.

However, it is within walking distance of UW. If your daughter is there for a special program her schedule will probably be quite full and she might just need a place to stay. This hotel seems to fit the bill.

There are quite a few restaurants, including a Chipotle’s, on University Avenue as well as some boutiques. The University Book Store is also on University Avenue.

Citysearch for Seattle has a lot of information for this area. You can use the address of the hotel and then see what else is in the area.

One piece of advice - tell your D to be street smart - know where she is going BEFORE she leaves the hotel. Don’t give money to panhandlers on the street, etc. Ignore those who approach her to ask questions.

A UW student was recently robbed at gunpoint at 45th and 15th and the University of Washington did send an email alert to students. A man stopped the student to ask for a light. I do not know what time the incident occured. As far as I know this was an unusual incident for this area. My own D would often go to the movie theatre with friends on University Avenue when in high school. She commented that when she was the only one left other parents would not leave until she was picked up. She did think there were weird people on the street.

So, tell your D to be aware of her surrounding and ignore strangers who approach her.

I do not mean to alarm you - just inform you the incident happened so your D can be aware. I know that is what I would want for my D.

No, I haven’t. I’ve driven by it often and it certainly looks spiffy, and has a great location for UW events.

I used to work in the U District, and would walk to my bus stop through the The Ave (University Avenue) which can be pretty weird, especially after dark, when strange and creepy-looking folks show up. Incidents happen on The Ave, but they are still very rare. During the day The Ave is a very vivid place with lots of shops and little restaurants, and their food prices can be very reasonable. There is a more upscale place called University Village not too far away with more shopping. Burke Museum is within walking distance, too, or you can take a bus downtown to the Pike Place Market, waterfront shops, the Art Museum, Sculpture Park, etc. Make sure to bring an umbrella and/or a waterproof coat if you plan on walking around, our rainy season just started ;)

Sorry can’t help you with the hotel info.

BB.

Sorry I did not read your initial post carefully - I thought your D needed a place to stay.

If I was you I would look into the Silver Cloud Inn near the University Village. U Village is a very nice shopping center - not a mall - with lots of restaurants and shops. However, it is an open shopping mall - so be certain to take BunsenBurner’s advice on rain gear.

BunsenBurner is correct in that you can take the bus downtown and not worry about driving from the U District. If you don’t want to worry about the rain Bellevue Square is a quick drive (depending on traffic) across 520. Lots of shops, restaurants, etc. in the Square and the fairly new additions across the street.

UVillage is an even tonier mall than BSquare however without dept stores
THere are umbrellas everywhere for patrons use however ( look for the yellow)

If I was only staying one night, I would save my energy and explore the area around the UW rather than going to Bellevue- really.
UVillage doesn’t have a theatre though- but the Ave has several.
You might check and see if there is a home Husky game when you will be here as that will affect your stay.

University Village is down a steep hill from the UW. It’s lovely, but it’s basically a shopping center. To get to UW, or the U district, you’ll have to either hike the hill about a quarter mile, or take a bus – not sure how often they run.

If it were me, I’d go for the Hotel Deca. About the same distance from campus property, but it’s a flatter and more interesting walk, past independent shops and restaurants, and yeah, some street people.

The Burke Museum is on campus, on the corner closest to the Hotel Deca (NW). It’s a quite nice natural history museum, with a good coffee shop downstairs. The Henry Gallery is also on campus, features modern art, and has another nice coffee shop. A taxi or bus ride will take you to the downtown Seattle Art Museum (SAM), which recently expanded a LOT, and has quite a variety of stuff to look at. It also has a nice coffee shop! (Do you detect a theme here?) Actually, SAM’s coffee shop is more of a restaurant. And by the time you are over there, you’re a stone’s throw from Pike Place Market - lots to see and do there.

We stayed at The Watertown Hotel (http://www.watertownseattle.com/) which is also walking distance from UW. I highly recommend it. They have loaner bikes and a special ‘ala cart’ program. We used their free shuttle to get to the Experience Music Project.
