We are planning to visit Occidental over the Easter Vacation with my son and daughter and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a local place to stay. We want to spend a couple of days in the area while we check out colleges.

thanks in advance

Hi, I’m an admission officer from Oxy, so I thought I’d respond. We have a list on our website at http://www.oxy.edu/x5499.xml for you to check out.

The hotels on our website are close to the campus–within a 10-15 minute drive. Those in Pasadena are close to Old Town where there are many great restaurants, shopping, bookstores, etc.

Some families choose to stay in West LA–Santa Monica, etc, which is a much longer drive (up to 1 hour in traffic), but close to the beach and other shopping and entertainment. Some also stay near the beach communities of Manhattan, Redondo, etc–which are also up to an hour drive, but again, beaches :-)

Hope that helps!

That helps a lot! I check here everyday to see if there is any activity and we are planning a visit at the same time. Brettleb, if your still around, could you comment about overnights? Without sounding presumptuous, will there be one for admitted students and/for URM’s? We are hoping my D might have that opportunity but would also love to be able to plan.

We take requests online for overnight visits, at which point a student staff member will call and/or email to finalize the details. That information is here:
http://www.oxy.edu/x1981.xml

As for admitted students, we will have 3 Friday receptions on these dates:
Friday, April 4, 2008

Friday, April 11, 2008

Friday, April 18, 2008

We also host overnight visitors on the Thursday night prior, and usually have a special program for URMs and other students that begins on those Thursdays as well. Studentsl get a separate invitation for that.

That helps immensly! About how far away timewise (considering traffic) would Arcadia be?

Another family from our High School may be coming as well, so I will forward on any information I get here.

Thanks

With no traffic, less than 30 minutes. With traffic, maybe 30-40 at the most. Not sure where you’re from, but by SoCal standards, Arcadia is what we would call close–10-15 miles or so ;)

See you on campus!
