Have been in the Holiday Inn Express and it was nothing special but also not offensive in any way.

Near Bard is much trickier as I am not sure there are any. Doing the same Google showed a Mariott in Kingston and I have driven by many smaller non-chain places. The Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck looks nice from the outside.

I have not stayed in any of these near Bard.

Good luck.

Also look on the Amherst admission website and follow links to Bed and Breakfasts in that area.

The Lord Jeffery Inn is right on the town commons in Amherst, which makes it adjacent to Amherst College. It is definitely the best location. I haven’t stayed there in quite a few years, but I assume they have kept up with modernizations, etc. My memory is that the “quaintness” is more than made up for by its location. I’m betting it is booked for any spring visits, though.

The Campus Center Hotel is run by the Hotel and Restaurant management program. High rise hotel on the UMass campus. There are restaurants in the building, also run by the program. It is probably about a mile or less from Amherst Commons and Amherst College.

The Beekman Arms and Delamater House in Rhinebeck are very nice, although both can be pricey and light sleepers in the rooms above the tavern might find it a bit noisy. The other problem is that it is often difficult to secure rooms on short notice (i.e. less than 4 months out).

Kingston is probably your best best. The Marriott is the newest of the chains over there. There are also a number of locally owned places in Hyde Park.

Other web-sites worth consulting include [Columbia County New York hotels, bed and breakfast, Lodging, Accommodations - Columbia County Lodging Association](http://www.columbiacountylodging.com/) and [Dutchess County Tourism - Lodging - Accomodations - Hotels](<a href=“404 | Dutchess County Tourism”>404 | Dutchess County Tourism)

For Amherst, there’s also a Courtyard Marriott Amherst (413-256-5454) and a Hampton Inn Hadley-Amherst (413-586-4851)

We stayed at the Coutyard Marriott Amherst last summer. It had just opened and was nice with an extremely convenient location for visiting all of the five colleges. We had been warned away from the Lord Jeffery by friends who had stayed there the month before and had found it in need of renovation. modernization, and sound proofing (again, we didn’t stay there ourselves so this may or may not be the case. However, reviews on a travel board indicated similar things). We also stayed in the Courtyard Marriott in Kingston, right across the river from Bard - about a 10 minute or so drive from campus and quite convenient. In fact, we did our whole east coast college tour in Courtyard Marriotts – they’re dependable, clean, usually conveniently located, if a bit unimaginative. However, by signing up for the membership club and sticking to Marriotts we earned free nights for our west coast college tour, with points left over, so we felt like we came out ahead. :)

^^^Looks like my “assumptions” about the Lord Jeff were too optimistic! Good to know, as we will be passing through Amherst this summer and were thinking of staying there a night or two.

I really like the Northampton Inn. It’s true that it’s in Northampton, but it’s a lovely venue and close enough to not be an issue.
