Housing for grad students

I put in my housing application a few weeks back. I selected “single occupancy bedroom” thinking this meant I’d get a single bedroom, all to myself. Though as I researched more about the living situations on campus, it seems like I’ll be sharing an apartment with other people? I am actually relocating to SLO for grad school (from NY) and read Cerro Vista is the only option for those of us who need winter housing. I thought I’d be getting my own apartment, but apparently it’s all 4 bedrooms? As a busy student juggling full time classes, a full time job, and research, I do not think I can handle living with 3 other people (who will, from what I gather, most likely be freshmen). Any information on grad student housing?

Ye… its exactly this…

Its an apartment…

You will have your own bedroom, so you will have all privacy you want…

but CalPoly cant provide a single bathroom and a single kitchen for each student… so you will share a kitchen and 2 bathrooms with 3 other students…

is not that bad… its even better… you will have your privacy and still some friends around…

If you want your own private bathroom and kitchen, you might want to consider looking off campus. There are a lot of housing options available, but you have to be careful since some can be loud and others aren’t kept up very well.

If you are placed in Cerro, chances are they’ll try and place you with older students rather than freshmen.

LizW47: Check Craigslist for reasonably priced (if you can find one) studio apartments. Or maybe a 1 bedroom. Sometimes you can find one in a quieter area, perhaps downtown or further from campus where you won’t find all the parties. Often lower rent, too. Or if you want to share with just one person with similar likes and dislikes, that’s another off-campus option. It’s often cheaper. Good luck!

I am opting for dorms because it is impossible for me to conduct a Craigslist apartment search while living in New York. I can’t accurately judge an apartment across the country, and no landlord will rent to a tenant they can’t meet. I don’t have the luxury of flying out there just to look at apartments (I’ve never even been to California, I’m totally throwing caution to the wind by going out there). Living on campus is pretty much a way for me to get around the hassle of finding an apartment.

So are there no single bedrooms on campus, anywhere? I would rather live in a single-bedroom (“single-occupancy bedroom” like I had stated on my application) in a dormitory than in an apartment with 3 people. Another option is, I can look at my contract and see what it says about moving out early, stay in the apartment and just look for Craigslist ads in SLO when I get there.

Pedro I know you are right and I should be looking at this as an opportunity to meet new people. I just know from past experiences I don’t do well rooming together with people :stuck_out_tongue:

On a plus side, my classes start earlier than everybody else’s. I will be moving in a full two weeks before everybody else. So, I get to pick the best room and decorate the entire apartment :P

No, there are no apartments that accommodate just one person on campus. It wouldn’t be economically or ecologically efficient to build that way, not to mention if several students requested single apartments, they would have to build a lot more.

I can understand your dilemma. And, I agree living on campus simplifies things. It sure did for us this past year when our daughter lived in PCVillage. I just think that most grad students choose to live off of campus, partly because they’ll be sharing with undergrads for the most part. My daughter will be a junior and will be living in a house off campus for the first time in the fall. I don’t think she could visualize living on campus her last two years, much less in grad school. But then that’s just her (and hundreds of others) :)

As you discovered, you’ll be living in a “single occupancy bedroom” if that’s what you requested. In other words, you won’t be sharing that bedroom. However, you WILL be sharing the rest of the apartment. If it’s a 4 bedroom apt. you will share the bathroom with one other female. I’m not sure, but is it possible for them to try to match you with other grad students? Or upperclassmen, at least? Trouble is, like you said, Cerro Vista is mostly freshmen.

I don’t know how it works to stay in an on-campus apartment and then find something elsewhere. We paid for my daughter’s Poly Canyon Village for the year. But, I imagine they would allow you to pay by the quarter. That would be a good idea—to look on Craigslist while you’re there. At least it’s an option.

By the way, what are you studying in grad school? This should be an adventure coming out to California never having been here in the past. You chose a school in a beautiful area. My daughter, on the other hand, wants to get her Master’s back East. And, no, she’s never been back there. I imagine she’ll find a way to visit before she applies to schools…or maybe not! She has a couple of years to go, but as you said, it’s not often easy to make the time. And, it costs money!

Best wishes to you! I hope that you can make some connections once you get out here and you’ll be able to find the ideal housing situation.

I’m getting my Masters of Education, specializing in Leadership and Administration. I know it’s not what you’d expect at Cal Poly, and I haven’t come across a single person online who is also in the education school. Who knows, maybe I’m the only one :stuck_out_tongue:

And you unfortunately can’t request to be housed with grad students. Cal Poly actually explicitly states this in the housing process, that they can’t guarantee you will be housed with other graduate students. When I read that, I was thinking, “Oh, they must mean there will be undergraduates in the apartment BUILDING.” I wasn’t crazy about the idea of freshmen throwing parties on my floor, but I guess I could deal with it. Now that I know the apartments are 4 bedrooms, I realize they meant “We can’t guarantee you will be housed with graduate students in YOUR APARTMENT.” I don’t know how many grad students live on campus but I hope they would at least try to place people together. The Housing department seems very nice and accommodating. They are already letting me move in two weeks early for classes, I don’t want to be a pain in the neck and complain about roommates!

Does Cal Poly let you know ahead of time who your roommates are going to be? Or is it kind of just a surprise on move-in day?

I talked to Housing and they said there will be other grads living in Cerro and they will try very hard to house me with them. Feeling much better now!

I hope it works out for you LizW47! I can certainly understand your dilemma! You might try to go to a Facebook page for Cal Poly and see if there are any for grad students for the year you’ll be graduating. My daughter found her dorm roommate as a freshman on Cal Poly Class of 2014 group on FB. Many students do that. Not as sure about grad students because I still have a feeling most of them choose to live OFF campus. When two or more students connect with another student on FB or elsewhere, they can then put in each other’s Housing Number when they choose an apt. through Cal Poly. That way you are guaranteed to be with at least one or maybe even more students of “your type or age group”.

Best wishes with your major! My husband took the roundabout way to education. BA in Econ from Stanford, MBA from UCLA, but decided to teach, so got his secondary teaching certificate in Math at San Jose State. That was over 30+ years ago. He often thought about getting his Administrative degree, as well, but he was very involved in coaching track and cross country and just never got around to it. His father did, so was able to retire with a higher retirement package. :)

The recently chosen National Teacher of the Year was a Cal Poly grad, although she got her teaching credential at Cal State Northridge:

I just saw this if you haven’t already. So, it looks like you can rent a place on campus for a quarter at a time. That will give you time to look for an individual apartment off-campus if you choose to go that route.

"Quarterly Lease Agreements

To meet the needs of students who don’t need housing for the entire academic year, University Housing is offering quarterly lease agreements at Cerro Vista Apartments and Poly Canyon Village. This option allows students who are graduating at the end of fall term, studying abroad for a quarter, or participating in a co-op or internship program to secure a lease that does not require a long-term financial commitment.
My husband and I purchased a very nice condo in the La Canada Village which is 2 miles from Cal Poly. We rent out the three bedrooms to Cal Poly and Cuesta students. Current tenants are 3rd and 4th year working students. They are not drinkers and no wild parties. Just a group of hard-working female students working through school. There are two opportunities at present. One private room and shared bath for $650 which included utilities and wireless internet and cable tv. The other is a private master bedroom and bath with a large closet and that rents for $800, which also include utilities.

Amenities include shared living room, dining room, and kitchen, sundeck, pool, laundry, beautiful view, close to hiking, biking, and golf, not to mention the beach which is a couple miles drive to Avila or Pismo.

If you are interested, please give me a call at 323-545-6741 or text me. The room is available August 1.
