Houston handyman recommendation needed!

DS lives in Houston and had a broken pipe emergency that flooded the kitchen. Water soaked through to the hallway below and came through the ceiling, He has had fans and dehumidifiers running for the past few days and he needs someone to replace the drywall in the ceiling now that the place has dried out.

He’s never had to deal with these types of homeowner issues before and isn’t sure where to find the right person to fix it at a fair price. The best recommendations come from word of mouth and CC has a great network. I know there are a few of you from the Houston area so I’m hoping you can suggest someone. PMs welcome. Thanks!

Wow, what a bummer. Coworkers can be a great source of recs.

Have you tried the usual suspects HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack? For the most part I have pretty good luck with people found from either place.

I sent him the link to HomeAdvisor – forgot about Thumbtack. Thanks.

I hire contractors all the time. I would never use Home Advisor. They will send you the names of any warm body willing to pay the fee. Home Advisor is the worst, because it demands your information UP FRONT instead of let you look at contractor reviews first and you decide. It will send it to everyone you can imagine, including many you would never consider. Thumbtack at least lets you look at some reviews. You want someone with all positive reviews, or only one bad one or maybe two, but not for disastrous things. Some people are just complainers and will write bad reviews for showing up with notice a little bit late. You are looking for patterns.

Either read AngiesList (if you have it), Yelp reviews, or Houzz for your area. I just got a fantastic contractor from Houzz All reviews were positive but the one that sold me was extensive about similar projects to mine, with the reviewer vehemently opining that if you have to wait for (my guy) for a YEAR, do it. He’s that good.

So far, he’s living up to the hype! .

Does his neighborhood have a Next Door site? Despite the hilarity of the twitter account, it really is a good resource for things like this.

^^ Yes, I told him to sign up. My Nextdoor site is great for recommendations like that.

Possibly call the realtor who sold him the place? They have a list of workers that they use and
reccomend.
