How bad is this?

My sister’s been in and out of the hospital all semester, and despite my hard work the last couple weeks my grades have dropped badly. My first semester junior year grades are
AP Chem: B-
Honors Precalc: C+
AP Lit: B
Medical Interventions: A
AP Physics: B-
AP Microeconomics: B
If I can bring these up next semester, will I still have a chance at NYU? My cumulative GPA from the last two years is a 3.9

Can you afford NYU?

It’s one of the most expensive schools and the FA is terrible. The Net Price Calculator is often way off for NYU.

Yes I can, the question is will I get in?

No one knows for sure whether you can get in. The downward trend may be explained because of your family circumstances. You may want to try their Liberal Studies program, as I understand that they take lower scores, and then move people up to the more senior level.

You may want to consider other schools in the area as safeties–

Wagner
Marymount Manhattan
Forham
Manhattanville
Manhattan
Purchase
Pace
CUNYs (the “Harvard of the Proletariat”)
Adelphi
Hofstra
St. John’s has a Queens campus and one near NYU
FIT
The New School (in the same area as NYU)

@Dustyfeathers: "CUNYs (the ‘Harvard of the Proletariat’)

That’s a classic.

@Waiting2exhale

It’s not original, sadly. That’s its “affectionate” nickname.

And it has produced a lot of Nobel Prize winners . . . .

Oh, I know. Just remarking.

Sorry, that seemed a little curt, @Dustyfeathers. I was in a rush and should have said, “I haven’t seen that in a long time,” and that professors and instructors who arrived in ‘the city,’ long after the acclaimed heyday of the CUNY system, and only somewhat in the wake of its stream, loved to extol the remarkable achievements of the graduates of CUNY and the strength and wonder of its programs. Truly a ‘For the People,’ idea at work.

OP, I second the New School and Fordham, if you haven’t already taken a look.

Oh no! It’s all good. I didn’t take it badly @Waiting2exhale

I still think that CUNY is a hidden gem for many programs.

The two schools you mention are solid and I think another hidden gem is Wagner. Has a lot to offer. Many people I know have been very satisfied with St. John’s of Queens/downtown Manhattan. It’s another often overlooked school. Adelphi offers many fine programs . . .the notable alumni of Manhattanville and Manhattan are pretty interesting . … .

You know there are a lot of options.

It’s a reach for you, but keep working hard. it’s not “out of reach”.
