How do HYPS court SCEA admits?

In many posts on this website, I’ve read many comments detailing how SCEA allows universities to attract their admits for a longer period of time and thus make them more likely to matriculate. However, I’ve never actually found out how they “court” admits. I’ve heard stories about MIT sending acceptance tubes and nerdy valentines, but I’ve never heard anything about HYPS doing anything special. I personally have not received anything from Princeton other than the generic “academic offerings” brochures they mail to all accepted students, regardless of when they’re admitted. If I already committed to Princeton back in December, will they still send me promotional material advocating that I attend Princeton or am I already old news since I’m going there?

Thanks!

No T-shirt? They were offered to admitted SCEA students. I suspect you’ll be getting lots of mailings from Princeton over the next few months.

@decillion: you need to order your free tee shirt from the admitted students website. Didn’t your interviewer call to congratulate you? I also had the head of the alumni association for my area call me recently. What she said made me feel very welcome: “when you become a Princetonian, it is not just attending Princeton for 4 years, you become a part of the Princeton family for life.” She also invited me to an upcoming (but not yet scheduled) admitted student/parent party with alums from my area. Maybe they just haven’t gotten around to contacting you yet? Also, did you read any of the pamphlets they sent us? They describe some of the amazing opportunites available to us.

My experience has been pretty similar to mathgirl’s. Got my T-Shirt in the mail a couple days after the acceptance letter. My interviewer contacted and congratulated me, also put me in contact with the local alumni association and current students from my area. Got to meet and chat with a current Junior who was back home for winter break over the holidays. Was invited to a dinner with the local alumni association, had a great time learning about the school…

I got my T-Shirt and the academic brochures, but I wasn’t contacted by my interviwer or the local alumni committee.

I’m sorry decillion. I’m sure you’ll be contacted soon! Alumni are pretty busy people, and Princeton admissions is extremely busy with RD apps. Admitting you early is Princeton’s way of telling you they really want you, so I’m sure you’re not old news to them =)

Maybe it depends on where you live? My son and I attended an reception for SCEA students and alum but we live in a large city with quite a few alums despite being across the country. (and my son’s interview was there; I think she was surprised to see him since she didn’t seem too impressed with him at the interview. LOL) Also, because of our income, Princeton will be flying my son out for admitted students weekend. He’s gotten lots of mail from Princeton about their various programs and I’ve called them at least once to ask about financial aid. My son didn’t get any calls from anyone, though.

I was admitted at Stanford a month ago and I’ve gotten a call from my regional admissions officer, call from a current stanford student, congratulatory letter from regional adcom with a handwritten note, information about student groups and the ability to get to know other admits on the facebook group.

I guess I’ll be…

forever unloved.

But loved enough to be admitted. :-)

We’re in a rural corner of NW NJ, and it’s been very quiet for us as well. A lower-than- you’d-expect number of HS grads around here, let alone Princeton alums, so we’re not stressing a whole bunch.

Hm, I emailed my interviewer a thank you within hours of my acceptance, so I was expecting the congratulations in the reply.

Aside from that, I got nothing. But then again, I consider myself ridiculously lucky to be accepted in the first place, so no complaints!

I am a Harvard admit, and I think H is doing an awesome job of making admitted students feel very special! I received a handwritten note in my admission package, an email from both my interviewer and the alumni committee, and a complimentary T-shirt. All that being said, I committed to Harvard almost immediately after I found out that I was accepted. Those who weren’t as sure of their decision as I was have been contacted personally by their regional admissions officers, as well as big time professors and assorted faculty members in the fields they have indicated they have interest in. It’s really incredible to know how much they soak you up into the family :)

I actually have not received any of that personal contact you mention. In fact, I received a very curt “Congrats” only recently from my interviewer.

Sent from my LG-P509 using CC

They bought me a car!

No, I’m just kidding. Maybe Harvard would have, but I’m still glad I’m going to Princeton.

TheBalticSea, Princeton has the highest endowment per student of any University of the world… And Harvard would never buy you a car, they don’t even know undergraduates exist haha! (Focus of Harvard on graduate students).

(I am a regular applicant to HYP, so can’t speak from personal experience yet hopefully…)

Yale also does a great job of courting scea admits. I got a free t-shirt, hand written notes on my admit packet, calls from a current student congratulating me in acceptance and another call from a student who is pursuing the same academic interests as I plan to, call from my regional admin officer, and much more!!! I started the year having a bias towards stanford but now I know Yale is the place for me! yales courting worked

Princeton has the strongest alumni network of any college in the country. Their annual giving rate of 61% is the highest in the US. (The closest Ivy, Dartmouth, barely cracks 50%). Their annual reunions are the largest and most attended of all American universities. Princeton should do more to leverage this incredible and loyal group. Out of HYP, P should be the best (by far) at recruiting.

I think they really begin in the regular round when all the kids are accepted.
Princeton Preview is a huge seller too. Also, the Princeton campus is without a doubt the prettiest of HYPS, which recruits kids by itself.

Wow… Deciding between colleges was so long ago for me!
I remember when I was deciding between Princeton, Stanford, and Yale in spring of 2007, I did not really receive much until the visiting weekend, but that was enough for me!
