How do I ask a Dean to remove a grade?

I read on here a while ago that if you had a bad semester due to documented reasons, the Dean of your college can remove a grade from your transcript.

Last semester, I went through a traumatic ordeal consisting with family deaths, transferring, my dad getting put on probation, etc., amongst other things, that I could not handle. Consequently my grades dipped.

How do I approach the College of my Dean to request a grade be removed from my transcript? What should I ask? aka…what should I do?

Your first step should be to read your student handbook/college catalog thoroughly. Whatever policy your school might have regarding such situations will be clearly outlined there.

Hope things are going better for you now.

It’s a school-by-school policy. No one here can help/ make suggestions without knowing what school you’re at.

Not necessarily. I know for a fact that some of our deans are able to bend the handbook policies at their discretion.

^True. But if there is an existing policy, it would be in the OP’s best interests to be familiar with it before asking for a meeting.

I agree with what the above posters said.

I just wanted to say that I have never heard of such a policy and I would not get my hopes up too high if I were you. More commonly, colleges seem to handle cases like yours by

 1. allowing students to withdraw from courses very late into the term (but before final grades are posted), and
 2. allowing students to retake the class and have the new grade replace the old grade on the transcript.
