Ways to meet the UC English proficiency requirement:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 80 or better (Berkeley prefers 100)
- International English Language testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5
- DuoLingo English Test (DET) with a minimum score of 115
Other ways for international students to meet the language requirement includes:
- 3+ years of Language of Instruction (LOI) in English
- Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition
- Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English (Language A only)
- Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English (Language A only)
- Score 24 or higher for the ACT English Language Arts (ELA)
Score 31 or higher on Writing and Language in the SAT
Here is how to read your SAT score report so you can enter the Writing and Language score. Note the UC’s will not accept the DSAT scores for the English Proficiency requirement.
Also, the digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet English language proficiency
