Ok, i must start out by saying how much I adore Rice University and am still amazed i was accepted…and i think i would be really happy there.

but anyway, i was recently notified that i was admitted to stanford early, though i applied through the RD plan; apparently, i was a “clear admit.” I never thought i would get into stanford, which has been my dream school since FOREVER, so i just applied to see what would happen.

So what’s the problem, right? Well, I never thought i was going to get into rice either, well my parents forced the idea into my head, so I was forced, again by my parents, to apply through the Early Decision, binding plan. I have already sent in my deposit for housing and a place in next year’s class.

WHAT DO I DO?? I desperately want to go to stanford. I mean, rice is a fantastic place…but it’s definitely not stanford.

I know that there are some brilliant minds on this board…so i’m sincerely asking for your help. Should I just give up and withdraw my admit to stanford and attend rice? or do i fight to get into stanford and look for a loophole? Thanks for everyone who replies… I really do appreciate it.

Haha, I thought I recognized your username from the Rice ED threads, so I was surprised to see you post on the other Stanford RD thread about getting in.

You probably shouldn’t have applied anywhere RD, or at least should’ve withdrawn your other apps when you get accepted ED. Were there any extenuating circumstances that you can use to break your ED contract? “Umm, I got accepted to a better school” isn’t a very good excuse.

But now that you’re in this situation…I’d suggest that you call the Rice admissions office and explain. Most likely they’ll say, tough luck, you signed a contract and are bound to Rice. But I guess there’s a chance that they’d let you off.

There is no loophole in this instance. When you were admitted ED to Rice it was your responsibility to withdraw your application from all other colleges. I wouldn’t try to get out of this at Rice because colleges communicate with each other about students who try to withdraw from ED, and you’re likely to find your acceptances withdrawn from both Stanford and Rice! You can always apply to transfer to Stanford after 1 year ar Rice- you’ll probably get in too. Good luck.

I don’t think Stanford would take you. They spell out somewhere (application? acceptance packet?) that having enrolled in another university is grounds for rescinding admission or expelling you from the school in the fall. Plus, they expect that you’d have withdrawn your app anyhow.
My humble recommendation is to decline the acceptance immediately.

Sorry bud. But at least you got into your first-choice school.

You were supposed to withdraw all apps after ED admission. If Stanford finds out that you were admited ED at Rice, they will recind their admission. And by that time you will have nowhere to go. Sometimes life is tough, and you have to take responsibility for your decisions. You are lucky that you can go to a great school (Rice). You can try to transfer to Stanford next year if you are not happy there.

This is awful. You didn’t apply early to your dream school, and you turned out to be a “clear admit”?!

You may well end up going to Rice. Remember, this is not a bad thing. I’m not saying that it’s absolutely impossible to get out of your situation, but the early application systems were designed so that in this situation, you are bound for Rice.

Dang Apollo, you got in at MIT thats crazy.

Im just curious but what were your stats and what made you so worried about acceptances?

As for you Q apolla Id say contact someone from rice and then contact someone from Stanford. They may or may not let you do it. Else you can risk everything and just try to sneak in, but that could be chancy.

Sorry dude… Hey, you can still go to stanford if you want to go to grad school! Besides, Rice isn’t that bad. (hey didnt steve jobs go to rice?)

Isn’t there some loophole that if you didn’t like their financial aid package you could get out of ED? That’s just a rumor…supposedly my GC got out of ED that way.

This is why you don’t apply ED if it’s not 100% your top choice. I’m sorry, but if you desperately want to go to Stanford, you shouldn’t have applied ED anywhere. You were supposed to withdraw your apps once you got in. You can look for a loophole, but I think that by signing a contract that you would go there, you are going to have to go. You can try contacting Rice, nut I don’t think they’re going to be very willing to let you get out of this. Let us know what happens though. Good luck.

most colleges will only let you skip out due to financial aid if you end up going to your state school for much better fin aid or merit scholarships

i doubt you can get out of it because of financial aid, so u can either fess up and hope that the colleges are nice to you, or just go to rice since you ARE legally binded to go there anyway…

I’d say play it safe and go to Rice. If you tell them about your situation, they could retract your acceptance since you already violated the agreement. Stanford will also retract your acceptance after they hear about Rice. As everyone else has been saying, you can easily transfer to Stanford.

FINANCIAL AID is key – i think it’s the only grounds under which you can legitimately not go to an ED-accepted school

technically – and I’m not advocating this by any means, just echoing what Harvard said, I think – the ED code is a “contractual” agreement, not a “legal” one. take that as you will; if you mess up, you could get admissions rescinded from both schools. but talking to them may help…
