Thanks so much! (also, I hope the formatting is easy on the eyes)

Once again no one can give you an answer untill you tell us what your GPA is.

Reading is quite low for the Ivies. Don’t puss out, study hard and take it again

Reporting rank from a small school is a problem in the Ivies because it screws up your CRS score and thus your AI. You need to see if your school will report it another way. You need to use the method that converts gpa to a % and then into a CRS number to plug into the AI formula. See Hernandez’s book.

Is 700 really that bad… I mean I have 800 in everything else and I still have 2300 composite. Also what the hell are you taking about CRS, AI???

I go to a small competitive private school. We routinely send kids to ivies (about 1-2) per year, so I don’t think my GPA will be a problem given that I’m valedictorian.

I can retake the SAT for an 800 reading, but I think Columbia will frown upon retaking a 2300…

I think you should take the SATs again if you think you can do better on reading. They superscore it so if you actually get an 800 then you’ll have a 2400 superscored which is pretty awesome. They won’t frown upon retaking a 2300, they’re not that stupid- they can see that you got a 700 in CR the first time and they’ll know that’s why you retook it.

I don’t think anyone could tell you whether your definitely in or not based on the stuff you posted. But also there isn’t anything you posted that would kill your chances, so basically I’d say you have as good a chance as anyone else as long as you keep up grades, write a good essay, get good recommendations, etc.

No, a 700 is not “quite low.” For Columbia, it falls around the 30-40th percentile for Columbia. Obviously, a 700 doesn’t stand out, but neither does it significantly hurt you. Orca doesn’t know what he/she/it is talking about

Sheep, I am also an applicant so take what I say with a grain of salt. However, I wouldn’t retake. It will make you look like you are score obsessed to take it 5 times just to raise CR. And there is no guarentee that you will raise it significantly. CR is the one section that is supposed to be the hardest to improve. You could get an 800 or you could get a 680…you just don’t know. And you have to report all scores to Columbia and a few others. I just don’t think it’s worth it to retake. I’d work on other aspects of your application instead. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with cortana that 700 is not that low. Best of luck!

Those telling Sheep to retake the 2300 SAT, look at last years results. There were many people who get rejected with 2300+ SAT. So, chill, your SAT is completely fine. If you do get rejected or deferred, your SAT will not be the reason.

How could you not know what a Academic index is. Only ivies calculate a AI.
It is the first calculation made in your folder. Your fate is pretty much sealed at this point.

AI 9= 94% chance

AI 8= 92% chance

AI 7=76% chance

AI 6=52% chance

AI 5=25% chance

Quit being a puss get you reading score up.

I’m pretty sure thats not how college admissions works^

Anyway according to Columbia University, the range for SAT is: 2150-2320

http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/classprofile

I think a 2300 is ok.

SheepGetKilled,
I agree with you that your SAT is fine but you have to realize that the admissions board doesn’t weight the writing portion of the SAT as highly as the other two sections. I mean they only added it a few years ago and most upper tier schools have been slow in accepting it as a unit of measurement due to the writing section being pretty arbitrary in its grading (e.g. Harvard found that writing longer essays led to higher scores even if the information was worse than a shorter essay). That being said, you seem like a very strong applicant academically but your extracurriculars seem to be lacking compared to many of the other applicants who are applying.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

What makes you say that my extracurriculars are lacking?

Well, the 4 years of two sports is good but it doesn’t really help that much in admissions unless you are actually being recruited for the sports. And then besides that the rest of your ECs don’t really stand out or seem particularly impressive. Self studying for AP exams is mildly impressive though. I mean your ECs aren’t bad by any means but compared to some of the other applicants that will be applying to Columbia I just think they are lacking.

Ok. I also did internships and other stuff (I had an umpiring job). Also will not applying for FA help at all?

Depending on the type of internship, that could help a lot. Also, FA does not affect admissions. Columbia is need blind (they don’t take into account whether or not you’re applying for financial aid for admissions).

Don’t listen to anything orca says. Your academics are good, but extracurriculars are a little lacking. There’s just nothing that stands out, other than the high academics. I’d say you’ve got a decent shot, but make sure you focus on something you’re passionate about in your essays, since that’s not evident from your extracurriculars.

SheepGetKilled AI is measured from a scale of 1 to 240…they get your average score for each section and take a zero off of it or something and get your score…I think. It’s an ivy admission trick

And orca Columbia uses 1-5.

Also, don’t worry about your SAT Score. That score is something like 98th percentile. People get in with 600s on the CR. Don’t listen to orca, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

For anyone who is interested, this link is how they actually calculate AI. But individual class rank isn’t as important as percentile at your school unless you are valedictorian.

[Academic Index (AI) Calculator](http://www.satscores.us/MyChances/AI_Calculator.asp)

I’m 6 out of 9, or 217, according to that calculator. How good is 6?
