How do state schools feel about Cs?

Over the course of my high school career, I have gotten a few Cs. although they were all C+s, i know it doesn’t matter, a C is a C. i can’t retake the classes but they are all in the same subject… math. it seems insane to blame my teacher but when my grandma and aunt died in the same month 6 years ago (6th grade) my teacher (only math teacher at my private school) moved me into her “special kids” math class due to my “poor concentration” and “doodling in my notebook” . for the rest of middle school i was in a math class with 4 other kids and we were all taught that math was not what we were destined to learn. i never learned basic algebra and it’s always super embarrassing trying to figure out equations. i tested into geometry when i was a freshman because even though she taught me little about math i must have taken random guesses somewhere. anyway… here i am now with a C in every math class i’ve taken with the only exception being sophomore year. i don’t know what the administration with think because they are reg math classes and even though i’ve taken summer school to learn algebra i cannot fix my past grades. will i be able to explain this to them?

The big picture is important. How do you do in your other classes and how did you do on the SAT/ACT?

1330 SAT, ~3.6 weighted GPA, 3.1 unweighted (i get a lot of Bs) not trying for any “top 100 schools” here either. i’ve gotten a C one sem in honors chemistry and a C in AP world history my freshman year. i’ve gotten a C in AP united states history my junior year both sems (that was my own fault)

What I would do is look for the thread on the parent’s forum that was for those who had gpas between 3.0 and 3.4. Many of the students got into really good schools. It will give you hope and let you see your options. check the search engine above.

I think you are a solid B student and you should aim for those schools where your GPA is competitive. An admissions committee will look at your transcript and will conclude what is obvious: math isn’t your strong point. It doesn’t mean you are doomed. For someone else, English is tough, and for someone else, it might be history. Your SAT is decent, so that may give you a little boost.

There are a number of long-running threads on CC: colleges for the Jewish B student, I got in without a 3.7 GPA club, and others such as the one listed above. You can do a search. Get a decent college guide book, there are a ton of great schools that people haven’t heard of where you will get a quality education. There is a college out there that is perfect for you. I suggest you post a thread in the college search and selection forum. List your stats and what your must-haves and would-likes are. Include info such as location preferred, size, majors if you have a clear idea, sporty, Greek Life, liberal, conservative, socially aware, Jesuit, etc… You will get better targeted advice there.
