How do they take so many AP courses?

I go to an international school in the Middle East. Small private, pretty good high school. The school offers 8 APs, all in “core” subjects. It’s impossible to take all 8 because of schedule issues since we use a block schedule, and only juniors and above are allowed to take AP courses. And these are freakin tough classes.

I don’t understand how some students in the States have like TEN or more APs by the time they graduate. And how they have like 7 AP courses in their senior schedule; how do they manage?? Here, with the AP courses, it’s tough enough having three AP courses per year, so how do you deal with 7??

Sorry, just wanted to say it out loud, because some (most actually) stats on this site have surprised me beyond belief. O_o

I am not too surprised that a number of students take 10+ AP classes before they graduate. In the American school system it is very common (for top students) to be accelerated; for example, middle school students might take several classes at a high school. By the time these kids get to high school, they are ready to take a whole bunch of AP classes and sometimes even go beyond that to take upper-level college classes in high school.

How intense AP classes are depends a lot on how they are taught. There are not a lot of students who take more than 3 APs a year, but I would not be surprised if the top student in most high schools would - and that’s the kind of student you are most likely to see on CC.

Also many students “self-teach” themselves different AP classes using prep books, which are very effective.

Hey be_somebody,

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t take a single AP course in high school. I went to a public state school in India and my high school never offered AP courses. The concept of AP is virtually non existent there.
So even though there are kids with 10 AP’s, there are also a few like me with 0 APs.

^same here, I’m from India too. But then it’s in context 'cos we don’t have that option here.
