While I understand those who don’t want grandkids, I’ve spent the past 5 hours with this little 6 week old pudgeball and I can’t get enough of her.
Jym, :x
Just not yet, for me. I’m still a kid. Though both of mine are making noises that Christmas isn’t “it” anymore without little ones bouncing around.
I, for one, can’t wait! I just became a MIL in September but I know they would like to start their family soon…and we’re all hoping they won’t be disappointed. My DIL will be 36 next month (my S is 32), and this has been the post-wedding plan all along. Since my other kids are 30 and 28, I will not be a young grandma, so if they’re on board, I am, too!
I can’t wait to be a grandmother. My son has informed me I have to wait 5 years
S1 once told me that he doesn’t want to wait that long because I am old. (I’m about to turn 69.) I told him he and DIL need to figure out when it works for them, not for me.
Those of you waiting for for grandbabies can become surrogate great aunts for Romani Jr in the meantime. (No pregnancy yet… aiming for spring of 2019 for baby.)
Here is what I am hearing from my kids 31, 29 and 27. No marriage or kids in the soon to be future. So no MIL or Grandma. Disappointed, but it is their lives.
Closest I am to MIL is to D1’s partner of almost 8 years. He is a good guy. But he and D1 broke up for about 6 months 3 or 4 years ago mostly because of “things HE was going through.” When HE asked to get back with D1, I remained completely neutral when asked how I felt about it. I said I would support her whatever her decision.
Well they got back together and have been happily together for 3 or 4 years since. I like him a lot and know she loves him. But the break up is always in the back of my mind.
Today I took one DIL and our FDIL to brunch and to The Phillips Collection in D.C. to see Renoir and Friends exhibit. It was so much fun. This thread made me realize I need to reach out to them and not just sit back and assume we’ll have a great relationship. I do love them. They make my sons very happy.
My middle son’s girlfriend is from Syria, and he’s telling us she’s “the one.” I have the feeling he will stay in the Middle East after he graduates from the American University of Beirut, so our grandkids could be far, far away. Oldest son will probably never get married, and our daughter is only 19.
I don’t have either yet. Came close with D but luckily they broke up after he hit her the third time! Since then all her bf’s have been awful. One other is up on assault charges for hitting her. The one she has now is the best so far but he has no job (just got laid off after getting fired (misunderstanding and they may rehire him), isn’t going to school (that isn’t his choice he just can’t afford it and parents won’t pay) and has decided he lives at our house. I could probably deal with him as a SIL but i don’t know. (D will be 21 in a month)
S is just about 19 (in a couple of weeks) so he has a long way to go. He has a gf he has told me he thinks is THE ONE. He has visited her parents, had me fly up to meet her and she is coming here for a few days after Christmas. I like her. I think she would be a fun DIL. I liked his previous gf (all through hs) too so I hope he keeps this trend up and picks a girl like either of these two!
My sister has a terrible relationship with her DIL. The DIL doesn’t want her children to come visit because it takes them away from the church for too many days. (We are talking about once a year for 5 days) They however travel all over they place and take the girls but never stop at my sister’s. Her son came one Christmas without them just to see his mom. My son told her that we would be there this year because he loves her. I thought that was nice (but I hadn’t planned on going. Oh well, 12 hour drive here we come.
Those of you who don’t want grandchildren (or don’t care) send them my way. I can’t wait. Many of my friends had children about 10 years before me, so they are getting grandchildren and I’m dying of jealousy. I make them blankets and go to the ‘grandmother’ showers. I think my daughter who is graduating in May will get married in about 2 years, and her boyfriend is 3 years older, so I think I won’t have to wait 5 years. The other daughter isn’t ready to get married and isn’t ready to have children. Poor me.
@romanigypsyeyes Great Aunt Gearmom. That would be awesome.
Wow, @momocarly! Glad your D is not with anyone who hits her any more! Yikes! So far, my kids have not shown signs of being “very serious” with anyone but we have liked their taste in friends and everyone they’ve introduced us to.
For almost the entire time that my mother was alive & DH & I have been married (my mom died 7 yr ago), she had a horrible relationship w/her SIL (my DH). The day before my wedding day, my mother urged me to not go through with the wedding, said it was a mistake, he’s not good enough for you, you haven’t thought about this long enough (we’d been dating for 2 1/2 years at that point, long enough), etc. When I expressed my horror to this, she upped the ante and said, “When it doesn’t work out, I’ll pay for your divorce.”
That permanently stained my & DH’s relationship with her for the rest of her life. She never had hardly anything nice to say about him. Constant criticism and passive-aggressive comments. He & I have been married for 22 years now.
For everyone whose kids haven’t gotten married yet, do yourselves and your future SIL/DILs a huge favor and keep your mouths shut around them re: your opinions of them.
I would think one thing that could doom your relationship with your DIL/SIL is to put pressure on them about having children.
H and I chose to wait 7 years after marrying to have any children. Though parenting has been the best time of my life I wouldn’t trade those 7 years, just he and I for anything.
