How do you sweeten your coffee a healthy way?

@Lizardly My first and most vivid memory of almost instantaneous bloat was in high school. I chewed a lot of gum, the plain old sugared kind. One day I picked up a pack of Carefree sugarless. Within 15 minutes I had to unzip my catholic high school skirt. I remember it that distinctly.

So even though aspartame would be acceptable in the FODMAP system, it - nor any of it’s other fake sweetener buddies - works in my system. It is all so individual.

Kerrygold unsalted butter. No sweetener, no milk or cream. It is similar to bulletproof coffee, but tastes better. Sort of my babystep towards bulletproof coffee.

It depends on how healthy you want to be. I am currently highly motivated to regain my health, so i drink my one cup of half-decaf coffee each morning.

Kerrygold butter is made from cows that eat grass. So nutrients are supposedly better. I have lowered my cholesterol significantly with this and other food choice changes.

I was introduced to a great coconut milk/almond milk creamer that I use in my coffee. It is not sweet but it sure is yummy. For added sweetness, I just add a teaspoon of sugar. But it’s really good.

Look in the Target refrigerator section sort of near the other creamers and milk. It comes in a carton.

My favorite local coffee house has a great machine. I can drink a latte from there with no sweetener at all, the espresso is so smooth.

Regular coffee I need/choose to have regular sugar and half-and-half.

If you hate the taste of coffee, why don’t you stop drinking it?

I like the taste of sweetened coffee, just the same as I like the taste of chocolate that is sweetened. Natural chocolate is just as bitter. Same concept.

^Agree. And well put. I love the taste of slightly sweetened coffee, even though black coffee tastes like ashes to me (and it’s not the coffee; my H drinks it black just fine. It’s me.)

So I’m enjoying almost all the suggestions in this thread. Just not the snarky why-are-you-drinking-it-then ones.

vanilla almond milk and sugar in the raw!

I’ve come to the conclusion there is no true healthy way to sweeten your coffee. Sugar is just not great for me in any form, I’m having to watch that level and don’t want it in the morning especially. Yes, I love sugar and will continue to partake now and then of something decadent, but I’d rather have it in chocolate form than in coffee. Stevia probably isn’t so bad, but I haven’t had that or creamer in 3 days and the no bloating is wonderful.

The trick is to find decent tasting coffee. The Instant I was using was just gag worthy without all the other stuff thrown in. I did find a hazelnut decaf at my store and tried it this morning. It is very smooth, I put in a little unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it’s not bad. I enjoy that hot drink first thing. I have to brew, but that’s ok.

So, thanks for all your tips and tricks.

Maxwell House. Either regular or Master Blend. Make a pot, leave it and then heat up cups in the microwave until it’s gone and then make another. You’re welcome.

The best coffee ever was Starbucks “Fincas de Chiapas”, but they don’t make it anymore.

We could start a whole other thread on “best coffee brands/blends”!!

You were using instant?! That’s part of the problem of taste I think!!!

Yes, I was wanting not to have to brew just one cup. On weekends I brew lite caffeine Maxwell House for DH. He always drinks it black.

Since this thread started, I’ve now settled on a version of bulletproof coffee that I’m really liking- I’m now using 1tbsp of MCT oil, 2tbsp of half&half and half a packet of stevia, whipped up with an aerolatte. The MCT oil has just a hint of coconut flavor that takes the whole thing up a notch, heh. I’ve found this combo makes it totally easy to last until noon when I generally start eating for the day.

@dietz199 interesting derailment. When my nephew was about 18 months old he would have lunch, go down for a nap and wake up screaming in terrible pain. To the extent of multiple visits to the ER and standing orders for invasive tests. My sister took him to an alternative practicioner and she determined he doesn’t have the right balance of bacteria in his gut so when he had a nice, balanced lunch his stomach would begin to digest the meats and the fruits would begin to ferment, causing the pain. His cure was to not eat means and fruits together and I think a round or two of probiotics.

^ So no butter? Sounds good!

For just one cup I’d switch from instant to pour-over it only takes seconds longer and tastes so much better. I put milek in the cup, zap it in the microwave, froth it if I am in the mood then put the filter its filter holder right on the cup. This one is great because it’s got a window so you can’t over fill. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/melitta-reg-pour-over-single-cup-brewing-cone/1010182077

Also (I know I suggested this already  ) do try Lactaid which basically tastes sweeter than regular milk because it’s already been turned into lactose.

Personally, I’d also try something other than Maxwell House.

@damon30 No butter - I’ve tried that and found it just too “heavy” for me. The MCT oil is super light, you don’t even notice it’s there once it’s emulsified with the aerolatte, and the half&half makes it more like a traditional coffee consistency-wise. I tap a little cinnamon on top for good measure.

"This trend is also known as bulletproof coffee, and it’s advertised to provide “clean energy” and boost cognitive function, Trisko says. "

“However, there is little research to prove that this type of fat has any long-term health benefits. At the end of the day, you are just as well off drinking a regular cup of coffee with a balanced breakfast of lean proteins and healthy fats, like a slice of whole-grain toast with avocado and an egg fried in olive oil,” she explains. “Opting for a balanced meal with healthy fats and proteins will keep your stomach and mind satisfied to get you through your morning.”

Not sure about healthy… but I drink TONS of decaf black tea with Splenda and fat free half & half.

Chock full o’nits with half and half for me. If I feel really fancy, I will make bulletproof with kerry gold unsalted and coconut oil but I still add the half and half, and blend in a
nutribullet. It is like a coconut flavored cappuccino, very rich and creamy. Mmmmmm
