How do you sweeten your coffee a healthy way?

I don’t sweeten my coffee, however, I’d suggest 1/2tsp sugar, maple syrup or honey - those all seem to be the least processed and most natural sweeteners.

Thank you for the suggestion of natural sweeteners. I’m concerned about my insulin as I’m pre-diabetic and don’t want that first thing in the morning.

Am I the only one who never heard of a bullet coffee before this thread?! Do coffee shops ever offer this? I don’t recall seeing it.

I was always a pink packet person (Sweet n Low) but then switched to the supposedly better for you yellow packet (Splenda.) A few years ago I decided I just didn’t want to keep putting that crap into my body, so I dialed it back for a bit and then just eliminated it all together. I also switched from fat free half and half to the real deal. Now that I am used to no sweetener, I find I can better appreciate the coffee flavor. If H and I share a cup of his sweetened coffee, I don’t really like it anymore. Can’t use flavored creams - way too sweet. It’s all a matter of what your taste buds are used to. My son keeps telling me to ditch the cream too, but I haven’t been able to do that - yet. @conmama I drink my coffee during my fast hours but don’t consider it to be breaking the fast with the little bit of cream I use. Purists may disagree, but IF scheduling won’t work for me if I can’t have my coffee in the morning!!

@abasket Bullet proof coffee is new, but where I live you can even get cans of it pre made. It is part of the Keto diet,

Thanks @Embracethemess . I read that if you consume something 50 calories or under, that isn’t considered breaking the fast. I start a PT job in a few weeks, and am trying to figure out how to work my IF to this schedule. I’ve started off the mornings drinking a smoothie at 9:30. But I’m home, so it’s easy. I’ve been reading if smoothies will stay that consistency, and I bought some ball jars to find out. (Make at night, refrigerate, then take with me to work).

I had my decaf this morning with vanilla almond milk. It is smooth, the taste is just ok. I just really like that hot liquid in the morning. Hopefully like you, after awhile my tastebuds will accommodate and I’ll enjoy it more. (Still loving my flatter tummy with no bloat!)

Day two of less sugar. It is interesting…I feel like I’m being a good girl, but don’t know if I’ll backslide…

Coming back to this thread. I have found out it’s the non dairy coffeemate creamer that was causing the terrible bloating, not the truvia. I now only drink coffee on the weekends ( light or decaf) and just out in 2 packets of the sweetener. My palate has gotten used to no hazelnut creamer, and I can now enjoy it. No bloat at all.

@conmama Exactly. You can literally drink coffee all day if you drink it without creamer. Just adjust the strength to the amount of caffeine you want.

I can’t tolerate non dairy creamer either. But half and half is fine. I can also tolerate unsweetened syrups so use that occasionally

@Embracethemess, I ditched half and half but it took awhile. I had to mix half and half with milk (50/50). Over time I reduced the amount of creamer and increased the amount of milk until I was using all milk. Over the last few months I’ve reduced the amount of milk to 2T. I can drink it with 1T, but I prefer 2T. Black coffee is too harsh on my stomach.

Happy to hear OP found a good solution. I always favor natural ingredients (e.g. cream and sugar) over artificial (e.g. “non dairy hazelnut creamer”).

I sweeten with chocolate milk. I haven’t read through 8 pages, so sorry if a duplicate. It is my cheaper version of the fancier mocha drinks at the local coffee houses.

Could someone explain “fat free half and half” to me? Half what, and half what?

^I figure I don’t want to know. I’m a “eat real food in moderation” kind of gal.

I’m afraid to look.

I use a clean spoon.

I just saw a recipe from goop of 8 oz coffee 2 T coconut butter and put it in the blender to mix.

We have a latte machine that I love. I don’t drink that much so I don’t sweat the small amount of milk and sugar. I went cold turkey on artificial sweeteners and if I do use sugar I prefer raw.

Skim milk has more sugar than whole milk. Not sure why this is, but the high protein diets suggest using whole milk rather than skim for that reason. We also have an Italian espresso maker and a milk frother. In combination, tey make me very happy.

I like the taste of the different nut milks but miss how they don’t always feel as “rich”. Recently tried cashew milk, though, and that is - for me anyways - a really nice alternative to cream. It has a nice, rich mouthfeel and the flavor is great. So I like a coffee with a glug of cashew milk now. I don’t usually sweeten it, but when I do, I like a drop or two of Stevia. Took me a while to get used to Stevia but I like it now. It’s not a straight sugar substitute but it’s a reasonable way to sweeten things a bit.
