Nothing my eye doctor gives me makes my chronic dry eyes any better. He suggests fish oil supplements. I tried them a couple of years ago and all they did was make my hair shiny but I thought I’d try again. As advised, I keep them in the freezer. The capsules or whatever they are are huge and I feel like I’m swallowing a handful of plastic every night. I would be surprised if they are digesting at all.

If you take fish oil supplements, how do you tolerate them?

Missypie, what do you mean by “how do you tolerate them?” Do you have a lot of trouble swallowing them or do you have fish oil burps? I might have one fish oil burp occassionally but not often. Taking them with food seems to help with that. Lots of pills have coatings. They dissolve easily. Fish oil is good for your heart and also has anti-inflammatory properties.

DH and I take two fish oil capsules every night after dinner. I lay them by our plates as if they were dessert! I don’t freeze them. Seems to me that would make them harder to swallow. We just gulp them down with a big drink of water. We also take two Glucosomine pills at the same time. They are waaay harder to get down than the fish oils!

I can swallow them fine. But they give me terrible stomach problems - again, as if I had swallowed a bunch of Polly Pocket pieces every night. I’ve been told to take them right before bed, so I don’t want to take with food. I really feel like I’m going to be sick right now…I have this idea that there are a dozen of these giant capsules just sitting in my digestive tract.

Hmmm…I used to take Coromega Fish Oil Packets. They’re like little pudding packets…orange flavored…taste OK. But the dose is not very high in those packets…although they claim absorption is better.

Lately, I’ve been taking the brand my dh uses. GNC triple strength. The normal dosage is just one pill. But I’m trying to relieve a nagging lower back problem (which fish oil is supposedly good for along with 8,000 other things). So I’m taking two in the morning and two in the evening. No fish burps. No upset stomach. I like that they’re soft…so I wouldn’t put them in the freezer. We go through them quickly so no shelf life issues here. Anyway, Amazon has the best price on them.

Hey, as a side benefit, they’re also associated with weight loss.

I have such a weird/random meal schedule that I have a hard time with the “take with food” type of pills. I eat a power bar at my desk at work for breakfast. Lunch is usually a real meal. Dinner time varies with when I get home from work. If I’m still full for lunch I won’t eat dinner and sometimes I just have low fat popcorn. I hate to add extra random calories into my diet just so I can “take with food.”

I just switched to krill oil. The capsules are half the size, and no “fish burps” for me. Also, the relevant compounds are supposed to absorb significantly better than regular fish oil.

Several years ago I got tired of swallowing so many large capsules, and I now just take a spoonful of liquid oil. Carlson’s is a very high quality brand and comes in several flavors. I like the orange flavor, and I take it any time of day after a meal or snack. I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

Try krill oil - it’s very high quality fish oil without the fishiness. That may not bother your stomach (it doesn’t bother my D’s very sensitive stomach). It has excellent health benefits. Also, since supplements are not always what they say they are, be sure to get yours from a reputable supplier.

MP…I’m thinking you should get the strongest fish oil you can find so you only have to take one (maybe one in the morning and one in the evening). My dh’s doctor highly recommended the GNC triple strength…said it was equivalent to the prescription strength. I think Vitamin World might carry something similar. Check the DHA/EPA counts PER CAPSULE on the label…if they’re not listed, it’s not a very good brand.

Y’all are just slaying me…you can write that you take something made of algae and don’t even squirm, right? You grind your own flax seed? Then you have to consume it in some manner. If our country was populated with people like me, the supplement/vitamin industry would go out of business. The only reason I can even consider putting fish oil in my mouth is that my eyes tear up and hurt constantly.

Friend had tremendous dry eye problems. After many unsuccessful procedures, she was advised by an opthamologist to take Barleans Flaxseed Oil Capsules. She says it works like nothing else she has tried. Doctor said Barleans brand is the answer (I know, it sounds weird).

I started using it myself, and have noticed a great improvement. I increased the dosage to three a day from two.

BTW, I am a TOTAL skeptic about most vitamin and “natural” supplements.
