How do you tolerate fish oil supplements?

Missypie- sweetiepie…
You need to eat better! A power bar, one “real meal” for lunch and then low-fat popcorn for dinner will not make you a healthy camper! I’m also wondering why the advise to take the fish oil before bed instead of with food.
Are you getting your 5-7 daily servings of fruit and veggies? ;)

Yeah, I’m sure I could eat better, but if I ate everything on the food pyramid every day I’d gain two dress sizes in a month. As we age, we don’t need all that much food.

The current food pyramid isn’t what I would suggest, either. But vegetables and fruits are more important as we age. Real food. Even if you just had an egg and a piece of fruit and skipped the power bar (fewer calories, sugar and fake stuff and more Omega 3s from egg yolk) and ate a large green salad with a small piece of wild salmon for dinner you would improve the nutritional balance greatly. You might not even need the fish oil.
Sorry, I know you didn’t start this thread for a critique of your eating patterns  but your meal summary really jumped out at me. I think many of the physical problems we experience as we age, like dry eyes, can be helped by dietary changes rather than supplements. Not that supplements are bad- but they don’t come close to the effectiveness of real food. Our doctors never suggest food changes- unless they come in pill form.

The guy who wrote that piece seems to be selling fish oil from his web site.

MP – I absolutely cannot take vitamins on an empty stomach. Maybe you should try taking one after your biggest meal, whenever that is.

Personally, I take two 3-6-9 Complete Omega capsules from Central Market brand. They suggest 3, but i cannot stomach that. I think it helps keep my skin from looking more leathery than necessary.

Missypie,

Maybe you are swallowing air along with your fish oil capsules and that’s what is causing your discomfort.

Last year, I decided to start supplementing my diet with calcium, fish oil capsules, and vitamins. The first few weeks I felt as though I had rocks in my stomach all the time. I think I was swallowing lots of air along with the pills. (I’ve always had trouble swallowing pills. I recall lots of drama when I was a kid over the issue. I simply couldn’t get them down and it drove my parents bonkers.) After getting better at swallowing my supplements, the uncomfortable feeling disappeared.

I figured out what the problem was. When I took fish oil supplements a couple of years ago, I bought a very high quality pill. This time around I took my husband’s ultra-cheap ones. (I swear he burps more in a day that I have our entire marriage.) I could probably do fine if I went back to the high quality ones, but now I’m grossed out by the very idea of them and have bought the flax seed oil capsules. Hope they work!
