How does AP Chinese exam compare to HSK?

Does anyone know approximately what level the AP Chinese exam would be or how it compares to HSK? My son, a beginning Chinese student, will be studying in a Beijing high school and taking HSK tests next year. I think U.S. universities will be more interested in the AP exam. I would like to know what level he needs to be at in order to do well on the AP exam next May.

The New HSK has 6 different levels. I think AP Chinese falls somewhere between 4th and the 5th level. If you are talking about the 6th level, the difficulty is incomparable.

The HSK has six different levels. Most jobs and universities where you’ll be expected to use Chinese on a daily basis require the HSK 5 or 6. The AP Chinese exam is roughly comparable in difficulty to the HSK 4. The HSK 6 is MUCH, MUCH more difficult.

If he scored high on the HSK 3 in Oct and continues to live and study in China through May, is it reasonable to expect that he will be well prepared for the AP exam in May?
