Hi everyone. I’m currently attending CUNY Hunter and I want to transfer to NYU CAS. I want to know how much harder, academically, is NYU CAS compared to CUNY Hunter (or CUNY in general). I want to transfer to NYU CAS, but I don’t know if I can do well academically if I do transfer. I know it is difficult to answer this question if you did not attend both schools, but any thoughts on this would be helpful. Btw, my intended major is computer science. Thank you.

Personally, every friend of mine who attended Hunter, loved it, and the education is probably superior to NYU, especially in your field. Hunter has phenomenal professors, who change lives. Ratio is a lot larger at Hunter you may have classes with 400 students, but somehow the profs know you. SO NYU has the prestige behind it, but education and cost, I would stick to Hunter

I’m an NYU junior and I’ve taken 2 classes at CUNY Hunter over the summer (Calculus II and Spanish I). To be honest, the Hunter classes were a bit easier. It could be that Summer classes in general are easier than those offered in Fall/Spring because there is less time, so professors choose to cover less material. By easier I mean that I felt that the grading was more lenient and the class in general wasn’t as rigorous. The Spanish class was Intro level anyway, so I imagine NYU’s Spanish I would be similar. But the Calc II class covered a lot of material we had learned in Calc I already.

However, the quality of teaching was the same. The classes I took at Hunter weren’t large either - Spanish was less than 30 students I think. NYU is large and the quality of professors varies a lot, too. Academically, I would guess you wouldn’t have trouble at NYU if you’re doing well in Hunter.

NYU is known for Courant, so the comp sci program here is good for sure. But Hunter’s is also good, and offers the same quality of education for a much more reasonable price (that’s why I like taking summer classes at Hunter). So I guess if the cost isn’t a burden to you (NYU has crap aid for transfers) then you should definitely apply! But if cost is a burden, I would stick to Hunter. It is known for being one of the best of the CUNY/SUNY system in NY state.

I don’t think you can compare the two directly. One is a public program, the other is private. Both are Tier 1 in their respective categories (national university vs. regional urban university), but I don’t think there’s much debate as to which is more prestigious. Unfortunately in today’s world, so much is based simply on name, i.e. where you went to school rather than how well you did.

If you can get in as a transfer, I think you’d probably be doing better for yourself in the long run than sticking it out where you are. There are definitely countless mitigating factors that might negate that however, so do what’s best for you.
