Computer engineering tends to have a greater hardware and systems focus. Is this a pro or con for the student?
Both are well regarded for computing majors and overall, so prestige factors are unlikely to matter.
UCSB and NYU would seem to be very different settings. Does your son have a sense of where he wants to be studying for 4 years? My husband is an NYU alum and loved it there, but people differ… lots of people would prefer the CA coast and beach! ![]()
Thank you for your reply, He always wanted to be in CS but now leaning more towards towards CE ( situational rn)
He was excited when he got accepted to NYU but kind of confused being a CA resident and wants to come back to Bay
Do you want to be in CS or UCSB?
What prestige does NYU have? You are not talking about business? I don’t think NYU has much “prestige” and “prestige” doesn’t get you a job at a pay level.
But you are not comparing apples to apples - as the majors are different.
Is the student comfortable with the hustle and urban-ness of NYC?
NYU as a school maybe but NYU Tandon for engineering is not generally considered more prestigious than UCSB engineering. UCSB engineering has a lower enrollment than comparable schools and has smaller class sizes. If @gauchoengineering still frequents CC, he can give a first hand account of UCSB CE.
Edit: Noticed later you have a slightly different majors but still both are in school of engineering.
OP said CS at NYU. Not clear whether it’s CS at CAS (under the courant institute) or one of the Tandon programs.
Agree. Courant does have some renowned faculty like Yann Lecun. I guess that could count as prestige. But I see that he has not taught many classes lately.
How easy/difficult is it to transfer from CS to CE at NYU?
A lot easier than the other way round, for sure. Mostly it’s only CS and Stern that are difficult to transfer into afaik.
Thank you all for your insights. We committed to UCSB ![]()
