NYU Times- That’s fine you don’t need to respond to that. I was sheading my thoughts on a commonly discussed topic on these forums.

"Some of you are being ridiculous…no one is disparaging HEOP, URMs, Tisch, LSP, Gallatin, Steinhardt or SCPS students. The OP asked what kind of grades/SAT scores one needs to get into NYU and we posted the average GPA/SAT or whatever and addressed that it’s unusual for a 2.8 student to get in, but possible.

Being a legacy or URM are considered “hooks” in admissions. No one said it’s easy for them to get in, simply that it’s a hook. Now people are getting upset and defending URMs as if anyone insulted them in the first place…just relax."

I’m not taking things to seriously. Being a URM is not a “Hook” or any advantage in admissions. People on these forums tend to inflate the significance racial or ethnic background has on admissions. Geographical location does factor, but it isn’t an unfair or significance benefit coming from a certain ethnic background. It’s college admissions, not…race admissions. >_>

What I was stating was my two cents on the whole “URM getting unfair admissions” and I also replied to what the OP asked. I simply stated that while it the odds are against an applicant with a significantly lower GPA, it isn’t impossible…

Nope, it is a hook in admissions. No one’s saying it’s unfair or there’s any significant benefit, but to deny it exists is just ignorant. It has been mentioned in hundreds of “college admissions” books, in articles in journals, magazines, newspapers, the internet, there’s hundreds of threads on it in this forum alone, and confirmed by admissions officers and college presidents across the nation - it makes no sense to pretend race plays no role in admissions. My mom used to work in Admissions at a CUNY, and even in diverse NYC, it exists. A “hook” can be anything, playing the violin, being wrestling team captain, speaking 4 languages, being Cherokee…it’s a minor detail, but it’s an admissions factor. I actually know a girl who’s 100% Iriquois and didn’t put it on her application because she didn’t want it to count as a “hook” and let her talents speak for themselves.

Comment, I hope you’re right…but I do think high schoolers, at least on CC, place too much importance on the admissions process. It’s not like Med school where even State U’s have 3% acceptance rates and they scrutinize your every move. Anyway I might be getting a job in the nyu admissions office this year so I guess i’ll see…

I wasn’t referring to everything else you said, I was referring to the fact that you thought I WASN’T being sarcastic with my original comment. If everything you said after that was meant to be directed specifically at me, then I am incredibly offended at the assumptions you made about what I think as well as at your accusation that I am ignorant, particularly because I belong to three distinct minority groups and have had to deal with real ignorance and intolerance my entire life.

i think you’re deflating the significance of being an URM. it’s a pretty big hook, whether or not you would like to believe it… and if you don’t know this by now, i really don’t know what you’ve been doing on this site.

I happen to agree with theos. Being and URM can either help you or hurt you and I also belong to several distinct minorities. It certainly didn’t help my daughter. She got in on her own merits, however, people always look at you and assume you got in because you are a minority. And yes I believe that it’s significance is inflated on CC.

yea but how do you tell if a person REALLY wants to go as opposed to going for prestigious purposes? wouldn’t that 4.0 imply that they tried their hardest in hs and really want to go to college? *** are you saying?

i know a girl who had a 1.89 gpa her freshmen year at my high school and now has a 4.0 at her new school, so I guess it depends on how difficult the high school is…?

Heh…
Well I hope my low economic status, Hispanic-ness, and failing school system help me get in, because with my crap test scores I’ll sure need it.

BTW
I applied to Tisch for film/tv ED. I have a pretty good reel and essay, along with an ok resume and grades. I also have the NYU summer program under my belt… but they lectured us on how that was not a guaranteed in.

ahah i dont thiink so. not a lot of skools have asian indians. they have a lotta chinese asians idk what thats called…but i think theyd want more asian indians…

SleepingGrunt,
Affirmative action is kind of a touchy topic for some people, because they (I say they to be subjective) think it caused a backlash for some people (ie. Caucasian and Asian Americans). I think CoolEjoocation is actually talking about the quota ratio, which only allows only a certain ratio of minorities in to their college. Although some people argue that ratios “affirm” diversity, the ratios may make it more difficult for some people to get in while making it easier for others.

But on a side note.
We officially have 9 days until everyone gets their letters. Final Countdown?
