How easy is to get a mobile phone connection in the US? (vs Matrix connection)

Hi,

So, what’re you guys planning to do for your mobile phones? How hard is it to get a mobile phone (say it takes time to get your SSN, although I do have a job, so that shouldn’t take time)? What do you think of Matrix’s student plans and is it worth getting a Matrix connection?

Thanks in advance,

You can get a prepaid mobile connection thing. Those are very convenient. If you want a postpaid connection, you’ll either have to pay a huge deposit (I think its $500, or something), or you can register your number under some US relative’s (or anyone else you know) Social Security No. I didn’t like Matrix much. They’re probably suitable for temporary connections, but I went ahead and got a permanent one during my first week to save myself from the hassle of changing numbers.
As for providers, AT&T and Verizon have the best coverage, but they’re expensive. Other cheaper ones (with worse quality) that you might want to look at are T-Mobile, Sprint, and Virgin.

Thanks for the reply!

So you paid the $500 or do you have a relative in the US?

I have relatives in the US but they don’t live near my university, so one of my relative’s friends who does live here registered my number under his SSN.
