How fast will I get rejected from UVa?

Out of state asian male.

-3.53 (9, 10, 11)
-3.50 (10, 11)

Courseload:
-2 honors/AP each year
-Advanced level/honors math (though I did drop into precalculus from precal honors because the latter class was simply too hard and I didn’t do too well…I did very well in precalculus though)
-planning to take 4 APs senior year

PSAT:
-167 Oct 2004
-216 Oct 2005

SAT: (CR/M/W in that order)

SATII:
-US History 740
-Math IIC 650 (retaking)
-Biology 630 (forget it, I’m not retaking.)
-French 610 (retaking)

ACT:
-Taking in september (I took a practice test for 2 hrs 45 minutes with no breaks from the red book and got a 29…so after ungodly amounts of studying, I expect a 31, 32 or 33 if I do well.

AP:
-Calculus AB
-Economics
-Environmental Science
-European History
-French Language
-United States History

Extracurriculars:

Other stuff to consider:
-I’m instate in California.
-I’ll have really good recommendations.
-I’m attending this program in international business and management at Dickinson College over the summer and I’ll get a really good recommendation from one of the professors at the program.
-I guess I’m the first person to go to college at the UNDERGRADUATE level in the US in my immediate family…I guess this doesn’t count since my mom went to grad school here and my dad has a PhD.
-I don’t have legacies anywhere.
-I visited NYU, BU, BC and Wesleyan in the summer.
-I go to a pretty competitive high school where the cumulative average is around 3.0 and where around 30% of students go to top schools.

about as fast as every other extremely underqualified oos applicant

If you class rank is not 5% or better (which is almost obvious but not sure by how much), then don’t even bother. If you can get your M/CR score in the upper 1400s and work on the SAT IIs and essays, then you could have a chance but a slim one with your GPA.

You have no chance of getting in UVA, Berkeley, UCLA, or NYU. Unless you are an all star at football, lax, or something.

Why:

 1. You’re out of state, and out of state UVA students are Duke/Ivy material
 2. You’re Asian, and UVA has “enough of them already”. Virginia itself is 4% Asian, and UVA is like 12%. May not seem like much since you’re from Cali, but Asians still overrepresent UVA, like most other top schools.

Try a top notch private school in the south (with the exception of Emory, Duke, and UVA) and you’ll prob. have a very good chance of getting in, like Wake Forest, Davidson College, or maybe Vandy and Notre Dame. This is because they are high caliber schools with few Asians, and the education there is better than NYU. You will have to sacrifice the city atmosphere for this, but it may be worth it. What is your desired major again?

Otherwise, prepare to go to Cal State or some school you won’t be happy at.

you guys are being a-holes. how could anybody POSSIBLY know that he’s going to get rejected? give him a shot. i got in. my SAT’s weren’t much better AND i’m out of state. you can get in if you go about it the right way. be real on your essays, don’t fudge your extra curricular activities, apply early decision, and see what happens. best of luck.

Intended major: finance or econ and psychology

Thanks bwilks…

Thanks, but no thanks. Berkeley and UCLA are soooo overrated in California, not to mention the 44% asian population.

futurenyustudent:

tip for you: when applying, don’t put finance/econ as intended major. too many asians do it. put something like asian studies, it wont matter later. what’s on app doesnt mean anything.

Uh, Berkeley and UCLA are better than overrated NYU. I wouldn’t shirk either of them.

bwilks -

it has nothing to do with his sats (although they are average at best for a oos uva applicant) - it has to do with his gpa. sorry to say but unless 3.5 makes him top 5% at his school - its going to be a really really really hard time for him to get in.

Too late. I already did like…2 years ago.

Unshirk them then? Or consider them for grad school. Seriously, Cal resident and you didn’t apply for them?? Argh. What a waste. =(

Why would I go to UC Berkeley or UCLA for grad school? What’s the benefit there? I wouldn’t get instate tuition because chances are, I’ll avoid CA at all costs, and then there are better schools like Northwestern, Columbia, Chicago and even Stern for MBA. Those are all places I wouldn’t have to move across the country for, which can get VERY expensive.

Not a great chance at all. I’d bet on rejection. NYU might throw you a bone, but I wouldn’t count on that, either.

The benefit of going to Berkeley for grad school?
Oh, I dunno, how about the fact that it’s one of the best grad schools in the world for pretty much ANYTHING that you would want to study? Take, for instance, business. Haas (7) is ranked higher than your beloved Stern (13).
I don’t see how you can completely reject grad school for that. I’ve seen two arguments that you’ve made: OHNO IT DOESN’T HAVE FINANCE and OHNO ASIANS GOD I HATE ASIANS.
On the first point: if you’re planning on going to grad school, your major choice won’t matter too much. The difference between majoring in finance and econ will be NEGLIGIBLE when applying to grad schools, assuming you would keep similar GPAs in both.
On the second point: I won’t try to understand why you’re so intolerant of Asians, but I don’t think it matters in grad school. When you’re a graduate student, you won’t be interacting with too much of the undergraduate population. If you do, it’d likely be through serving as a GSI (graduate student instructor), and you WOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY.

So don’t throw the UCs out yet. Really, you’re being quite ridiculous about it.

You’re spot on, quirkily. Berkeley has among the best graduate programs in the world in many fields. Maybe the OP is knocking it because he wouldn’t get in?

Some CA residents may just take what they have too much for granted. I’d go to Berkeley over basically all other schools except a handful, ESPECIALLY for Grad School. Jeez, if you even have to ask why UCB for grad then I don’t know if you’ve been researching your options enough.

Not to mention that tuition costs should be a minor consideration for graduate school. Any professional program worth going to should pay for itself, and the cost of any PhD program worth attending usually is covered by fellowships, teaching assistantships and other forms of financial assistance.

Yeah… no one wants their PhD candidates working at McDonald’s to pay off their debts lol

ANYWAYS…so what are the chances that I’ll get rejected? like 98/100?

BTW I got a 3.84 (38/710…not sure where they came up with that…but sounds about right) at Dickinson…I took a couple summer classes there. Just to clear up any confusion, I’m a high school senior and I’m applying as a potential freshman…and just to clear up any confusion as to why I won’t apply to Berkeley, let’s just say that their financial resources are SEVERELY lacking, to say the least.

dude I hate to be an ass but seriously, ur being extremely naive here. I would do just about anything to live in california JUST TO HAVE INSTATE BENEFIT TO UCLA AND UC-BERKELEY. That means that even if I’m NOT guarenteed admission to them, I still do a lot just to live there. UCLA and UCB is good for everything unlike stupid NYU. What if your major/interest changes? I’d like to see you get into med school through NYU. You call Berkeley overrated?! HA, NYU is notorious for this. So please just quit posting on CC because I hate it when people who have such good oppurtunities waste them
