Eh i really dont want to gain weight next year…how likely is this?

most people gain weight through alcohol and late night runs to crossroads and bcaf.

Nutritional Information for Bruin Caf

no matter what the food is, there are plenty of ways to avoid gaining weight:
-don’t eat at rendezvous all the time (specifically, avoid nachos overdose)
-ditto crossroads and chili dogs/fries, milkshakes
-don’t go to bcaf every time you want a snack
-AVOID BROWNIE GOO (and limit desserts in general)
-in the dining hall, take only one or two plates of food at a time and go back for more IF you need it (don’t take every entree, then try to eat your way through them)
-when leaving the dining hall, take a piece of fruit instead of cookies/ice cream
-go to wooden or use your dorm exercise equipment
-live in hedrick or hitch
-go to class! take the stairs, not the elevator, whenever you can (it’s actually faster in most buildings anyway)
-don’t get a jamba smoothie AND an ordinary lunch on top of that
-if you’re really health conscious, shop at ralph’s or whole foods and stock up your fridge with fruit and other healthy things
-eat breakfast! maybe not a dining hall breakfast every morning, but at least a bowl of healthy cereal or a piece of fruit
-don’t eat breakfast, lunch, first dinner, second dinner, and bcaf late nite run every day… or ever…
-join a club that will increase your physical fitness (martial arts, dance, bruinwalkers, colorguard)
-don’t sit around your dorm room all day and only leave to eat or go to class
-take walks around the campus! walk around westwood! walk/run perimeter!

now if only i could take my own advice xD

WOODEN.

/im like practically living there right now.

There’s lots of fattening foods at UCLA. If you live off of pizza, french fries and brownie goo you are well on your way to gaining 15 pounds within the first quarter (ask half of my friends).

There are also decent foods to be eaten. I’ve lost 25 pounds this year by avoiding sugar and fatty foods. Special K (one packet of Equal on it makes it really sweet), diet sodas, chicken, salads, sushi, occasional Asian or Mexican dishes, bananas, sandwiches. Basically anything with sugar or anything you could get in an American diner is avoided and the rest is fair game.

If you aren’t up for that, Wooden rocks for keeping off the pounds. I have another friend who lost 40 pounds on hard core working out alone.

how I’ve gained weight first quarteR: eating in the dining hall 3 meals a day, eating burgers, fries, pizza, and ice cream

how i’ve lost the weight and kept it off: living in hitch, filling up on apples and bran muffins, NO ICE CREAM, PIZZA, OR BURGERS, eating more at bru caf and puzzles (but getting the lean turkey sandwiches on wheat), never crossroads, no smoothies, minimal booze (esp. no beer), drinking decaf coffee or hot tea with no sugar or milk. I NEVER EAT PAST 9 PM EITHER. and i have a protein shake for breakfast to control cravings.

on top of that, i still eat huge portions and lots of pastas and fries.

My god - how do you people live?!

especially…

the horror!

WOOWWW soo many calories ****ttt i dont wanna gain a lota wieght :(

Relax, yeah there is fat food, but you are fine as long as you don’t eat too much. Are potatoes boiled in oil that good? Basically, just think Fresh Choice / Hometown Buffet when you think UCLA food, except that it tastes better and is a bit fresher. There is not quite as many salads as Fresh Choice, but there is also not as much greasy stuff as Hometown Buffet although they do have fries, cakes, and stuff. Just learn to control yourself, and keep in mind that the brownie will still be there tomorrow if you really want to eat it.

By the way, are you Chinese?

Don’t eat/drink junk excessively. Eat a balanced diet. Simple as that. Working out is overrated.

No, it’s not.

i eat a lot of junky food. but i dont eat a lot. im not fat, and didnt gain much weight. like 5 lbs. ;)

you’ll probably hate me for asking this, but how does one gain weight? i’ve tried everything and my metabolism processes food as fast as i can chow it down. i’ve tried to build mass by lifting, eating tons of carbs, etc but nothing works. if anything, i lose weight. i would like to eventually be in the healthy weight-zone…i know you probably think this is the ideal weight “problem,” but it’d be nice to actually gain/lose weight like a normal person.

(i’m asian and my entire family is like this, so i’m not sure how effective it’d be to go against my genes)

any advice?

bfired, i just spent 2 hours at wooden.

i hate you.

: )

lol one of my azn friends has such a small/skinny frame, she was lighter than my friend’s labrador until sometime during high school.

really can’t help you in that respect… just saying, i know it’s a weight problem too xD

I guess I was used to eating really healthy food back at home, because my mom’s a vegetarian health freak. After I got to UCLA… OH MAN. haha.

I’m pretty athletic, and I DO work out. I’m in dragonboat, and we have pretty intense conditioning/workouts 3 days a week for 1.5 hours each day. I’m also on the UCLA badminton team and I play for a good amount of hours 2-3 times a week.

AND I’m on the 11 meal plan. Needless to say… I gained a bit over 15lbs already. I really don’t know how :(

I blame most of it on:
- the fattening dorm food

- genes… haha. My dad’s side are all overweight.

yeah… I’m sad. I’m planning (or more like hoping) to lose it all over the summer. And next year I’m moving out to the apartments and making my own food.

Icarus, minimal booze doesn’t mean no booze. also, hard liquor is stimulating to the metabolism and has less calories/ wine and beer is what sticks to the gut. The ice cream in the dorms is awful. Have you ever seen it being made? Same goes with pizza and burgers. It’s a step above mcdonalds and dominos.

You mean the hills don’t isn’t enough exercise??

omg namaste what are you talking about

hard liquor is HORRIBLE there are like 150 calories in a shot, and if you do 10 with no chaser, thats like 1500 calories and most people chase it with those smoothies or fruit juice or something, so add another 400 calories. you are going to get fat fat fat.
