@Marcie123 Thanks for the feedback. I just posted my daughters college list, which actually does includes some safety schools and reaches. As indicated earlier, I just want my daughter to my happy regardless of if she attends an ivy or NOT. I actually think she would be better suited at a smaller school with a more robust support system after many years of grueling high school experience. I don’t want her to get burnt out.
On that end - what are some schools with a good mental health support system? My D does suffer from some depressive moods.
Well…I’d take UCLA off the list. In terms of need based aid…they offer ZERO to out of state students. Zero.
If Emory and Tisch are completed…then why aren’t they being SUBMITTED.
Wesleyan deadline is…tomorrow…so if she can’t get it done today…take it off the list too.
Vandy deadline is tomorrow also.
Harvard is tomorrow as well.
Boston University is January 2. Cornell is Jan 2 as well.
Some of her list is going to have to be jettisoned because she is going to miss the deadlines.
Did you also look at the financial aid application deadlines for these schools? Al of them? Don’t miss those deadlines or you could be missing out on aid. The vast majority of schools on your list require the CSS Profile…and that’s not free to submit (although a number of fee waivers can be gotten).
Personally…I’d take GWU off the list. How are you going to pay for that?
Have you run net price calculators for ALL of these colleges? All of them? Start there.
@thumper1. I’m sorry I was not more clear, she did SUBMIT to Emory and Tisch. In terms of aid, my husband and I already covered that end and filled out the CSS profile. She just needs to finish her side, the supplements. It is unfortunate because she is so close to being done, she just needs to keep going.
Run some net price calculators immediately. Offhand I’d guess these will be full price or close to it -
Emerson (not meet-full need)
UCLA (if not CA resident)
UMass (If not MA resident)
Boston University (not meet-full need)
Florida State University (if not FL resident)
George Washington University (not meet-full need)
Fordham (not meet-full need)
–I believe Dickinson College has a 1/15 deadline and it may be good fit for your D.
– Please check that any schools she applies to are also a financial fit for your family.
–LACs often look for demonstrated interest which is hard to do at this late date. It is worth trying but understand that may be a factor in admissions decisions at some schools.
–A constructive gap year might be a good alternative for your D.
My D applied to several schools on your D’s list. If she does a gap year and keeps the same list, note that USC and BU have merit consideration deadlines of 12/1. Incidentally, those were my D’s next two preferences after Brown.
@ElleLakes - Hamilton has a brand new arts/theatre building, open curriculum (she’ll have to pass a swim test), and no extra writing requirements. She could submit the application today. (And we have alums in the film industry too)
If D is not eligible for SAT fee waivers, then she will not get CSS profile waivers.
If you are looking at schools that require score reports and the CSS profile you are talking about approx $100/school in application fees.
I agree with @OHMomof2 about which schools to cut. You need to run the net price calculator twice (once with 2 in college and once with one n college). there will be an expectation that when D1 graduates, you will be able to use the money to pay for D2. Make sure that you have schools that are affordable options over the cost of 4 years.
Don’t sleep on the women’s colleges. It may be very worth while to toss an application at Mount Holyoke (film major, part of the 5 college consortium, and possible merit money) and Barnard (film major, NYC, cross registration at Columbia)
Oh goodness - looking at that list - no wonder the poor child doesn’t want to face the rest of her applications. My son crossed off Tufts because the app is just too involved for the low acceptance rate. He figures 2 low acceptance rate schools is enough. I would forget the ivies at this point - get the Ithaca college one in, do Wesleyan, Hamilton and other LACs that don’t have additional writing requirements. What about a SUNY? Is it Plattsburgh that’s more art oriented?
Emerson was my daughters number one program for Bfa theater design. She got in which is crazy competitive but she got no merit. In the arts I think only 10 kids were offered merit. We just couldn’t afford it with our second kid coming up. It’s a great school but it’s a blessing in disguise. She got accepted with merit to her number 2 program, quickly became the lead designer but wanted more. Her college couldn’t offer her what she wanted so she transferred to another lac and got about twice the merit. She is extremely happy now and not burnt out as she was. This would of never happened if she went to Emerson. Soooo… Becareful of what you wish for.
Look at your medical coverage, especially for out of network cost (if you are part of a HMO), so see if you will have adequate coverage wherever she goes (you may have to purchase the student health plan if you don’t have adequate insurance)
@compmom , any recommendations as what Op should be doing now; getting a 504, etc, so that D can register at the office of (dis)ability services for any supports that she may need.
I am 100% serious about Hamilton. We toured this summer and I was absolutely blown away by the resources available to the art/film/theatre students. It’s worth a look - she could get the app in today and then take a look - they are doing interviews on campus until the end of January. They are also putting in a new student health/mental wellness center, and claim to meet full need. Great school, great community of people.
Op- I’ll echo what other posters have said- your D’s list is WAY too long. No wonder she’s unmotivated- what a bruiser list she has.
I would not send a kid who’s had a history of depression and had some bullying? social issues? in HS across the country. That’s just me. I’d want to know that I could get up early on a weekend morning, do the drive, put eyes on my kid for a late lunch and head back to be in bed that night and read to be at work the next day. But that’s me.
Rather than put MORE pressure on your D, I’d take an hour and quickly figure out which schools will accept applications after January 1, cut everything else except for U Mass.
I agree with other posters that Emerson is likely to be unaffordable, and the probability that NYU will be affordable is very, very slim.
Did you discuss finances at all with your D’s college counselor? This is not a good list for a kid who needs to be aware of finances…
What is your rock bottom “we can pay X per year” for this kid? Let’s start there rather than have us all throwing out ideas of film/artsy colleges that have a deadline in a few hours which you cannot afford…
