How hard is it to get into Brown?

@Marcie123 Thank you SO much! I will speak to my D about these schools right away. Anybody know any other schools without supplements?

@lookingforward. I agree completely, this college process has been a mess for both my oldest daughters. I am hoping that my son, who is currently in 7th grade, will have an easier experience. My other daughter from 2 years ago is currently at Hofstra University and adores it. My husband, I am so relieved! She has really found her people and is majoring in economics.

@thumper1. My daughter got a 35 on her ACT and 1550 on her SAT; an AP 5 in History and Calculus BC; and a 4.2 weighted GPA. She is part of her school film club and has produced 3 films, one of which received 4 national high school film awards.

@turtletime time Stay strong!

@airway1 Thank you!

I’ll repeat my suggestion of Muhlenberg- great for an artsy kid, warm and supportive student body, a safety for this kid but much smaller than U Mass. And I hope you guys looked at Skidmore, Conn College, Vassar, Bard- all easier to get into than Brown but with some of/many of the same qualities??? I know a few aspiring/already launched filmmakers who loved Fordham (definitely a match for your D) and some if its media programs- easy access to talent in NYC for both commercial and documentary type film.

Hugs to you, OP. Frustrating for a parent for sure, but your D sounds terrific. Glad your older D has found her peeps!!!

@ElleLakes , without wanting to add pressure, FYI on another thread they mentioned Emory has extended its deadline to 7 January- in case it’s a school your daughter might be interested in, with a little more time to prep. Good luck.

I found this article which lists schools with no supplements https://www.koppelmangroup.com/blog/2018/8/25/the-best-colleges-with-no-supplements-2018-2019
Some of them may be a good fit for your D…ex. Kenyon, Skidmore, Colby, Muhlenberg, Wesleyan to name a few.

Okay. So now you consider Plan B, just in case. Lots of kids do very productive gap years, grow in strengths.

Just saying, as much for lurkers: the Brown Open Curriculum isn’t about courses you don’t “have to” take. Or just focusing on your concentration. It’s about broader curiosities than just the interests you think you have at 17-18. And serious self management, to explore, but also complete degree requirements on schedule.

You could still apply to some LAC’s that do not require supplement material - Wesleyan and Middlebury may not require additional material. The application process for each of those colleges can be done within an hour. Clark University too, if I am not mistaken. It is not too late to consider them. Your daughter has the stats.

@blossom. Thank you for the suggestions! I will speak with her this afternoon at around 3:45 when she comes back from her one day new years film camp/workshop. My daughter did work very hard in high school to get the grades, scores, and ECs she did. I think she was just so devasted by the deferral she lost all motivation.

If all else fails, around May 1 the list of colleges with openings will be released. There are always many fine schools on that list where an excellent education can be obtained, if she is so inclined.

Can she get her act together to submit an application by…Jan 1? Wesleyan seems like it would be a good choice for her…but their deadline is…tomorrow.

Skidmore is January 15.

Muhlenberg is February 1.

If she could start today…and do Wesleyan…she would have two weeks to do Skidmore…and another two weeks to do Muhlenberg.

I don’t understand why she didn’t have more colleges on her list, knowing Brown is so difficult to get into. Brown was my D’s top choice as well but she had a list of reaches, matches and safeties. She would have been happy attending any. She picked her favorite safety and applied to their honors college which would have made the school even more appealing.

@SJ2727. Ok, actually my niece went there and loved it. That is one of the only schools she submitted too.

Anyway, I digress, here is her list:

Completed:
Brown (ED - deferred)
NYU Tisch School
Emory

Halfway complete:
Emerson
Cornell
UCLA
Harvard
UMass
Boston University

Not completed at all:
Florida State University
USC
Ithaca College
Vanderbilt
George Washington University
Wesleyan
Tufts

Additions (if my daughter has the energy to complete any more):
Muhlenberg
Fordham
Vassar

I think the list is varied with different ranges of difficulty, location, and film studies programs. In total, the list has 15 different schools (created with her college counselor) not including the potential additions. It’s a lot of schools! Plus, the application fees are quite pricey and I do not think we will be able to afford all of these schools. My D is on scholarship at Concord Academy.

Any recommendations on how to make ends meet? Are there any scholarship programs to cover admissions application feeds? Also, which ones should we remove from the list?

@happy1 Perfect! I will speak to her this afternoon and submit to many of those schools asap. I think moving forward focusing on admitting to schools without supplements is the better way to go…? Am I correct in beliving that?

@happy4u. Thank you for the support, I really need it right now. CC has always been a great resource for me and my family.

@Trixy34 Hahaha! Very true, agreeded

Second Muhlenberg… My daughters best friend is graduating from there. He was a bfa theater kid that is now into mathematics and got a great education from there but still retained his cool artsy side.

@Knowsstuff Good to know, thanks
